WESTON, Wis. — An 11-year-old girl died after her parents prayed for healing rather than seek medical help for a treatable form of diabetes, police said Tuesday.
Everest Metro Police Chief Dan Vergin said Madeline Neumann died Sunday.
"She got sicker and sicker until she was dead," he said.
Vergin said an autopsy determined the girl died from diabetic ketoacidosis, an ailment that left her with too little insulin in her body, and she had probably been ill for about 30 days, suffering symptoms like nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, loss of appetite and weakness.
The girl's parents, Dale and Leilani Neumann, attributed the death to "apparently they didn't have enough faith," the police chief said.
They believed the key to healing "was it was better to keep praying. Call more people to help pray," he said.
The mother believes the girl could still be resurrected, the police chief said.
Telephone messages left at the Neumann home by The Associated Press were not immediately returned.
The family does not attend an organized church or participate in an organized religion, Vergin said. "They have a little Bible study of a few people."

The parents told investigators their daughter last saw a doctor when she was 3 to get some shots, Vergin said. The girl had attended public school during the first semester but didn't return for the second semester.
Officers went to the home after one of the girl's relatives in California called police to check on her, Vergin said. She was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The relative was fearful the girl was "extremely ill, dire," Vergin said.
The girl has three siblings, ranging in age from 13 to 16, the police chief said.
"They are still in the home," he said. "There is no reason to remove them. There is no abuse or signs of abuse that we can see."
The girl's death remains under investigation and the findings will be forwarded to the district attorney to review for possible charges, the chief said.
The family operates a coffee shop in Weston, which is a suburb of Wausau, Vergin said.

beg to differ

Seriously.. those children need out, I'm not the smartest guy around but I know that its not a safe environment for them.

People who depend on prayer and nothing else are idiots. Help from above does come in the form of medication, etc. Anyone who relies on outright miracles don't understand religion.

Are the parents brother and sister?

Its a miracle the parents still have the other children.

so one day there was a man who was swimming in the middle of the ocean after his boat sank.

Later a boat comes up to him and a person on board shouts "hey mister, you need help!?"

The man in the ocean said " No thank you, God will save me"

later Another boat went over to him and said " hey you, you look like you need help!"

the man said again " No thank you, god will save me"

Hours later the man became to tired and drowned

Moments later the man arrived at heaven and said " Hey God why didn't you save me!?"

God replied "I sent two boats to you, Ya Dummy!"

My thoughts exactly.

Cult nuts should read that story, instead of the word.

They'll learn alot more, than their asinine interpretation of the Bible.

Ah, the joys of religious fundamentalism.

I think he's gone or something. There were a few times already when his bat phone was ringing because someone used the word "religion" or "Christianity" but he didn't answer and didn't show up. I seriously imagine it that way. Either that or he had just used the search function on those words every day.

Things like this are always sad... gotta wonder if the girl had any say in the matter.

Probably brainwashed from around the age of three. People like this need to have their kids taken away along with their reproductive abilities. Now, as for God in all of this, how could a God who "loves everyone", allow this to happen to the little girl? Or was death the best thing for her? I always wonder when things like this occur, where is God when innocents need him? I guess he must be busy.

Ah, the old "Why would a loving God let this happen?" question. Let me explain it.

Her death will set in motion a necessary chain of events. It's as simple as that. That's what keeps the world going.

Either that, or there is no God, or God has a non-interference policy.

If I was god and people started praying to me instead of helping their kids...I'd just shake my head.

Logic people...use it.

Question: Were they Jehovah Witnesses?

I don't know of any Christian Religion in my experience that would tell their parishioners to pray and not get medical help.

Well, the idea is to seek medical help then pray.

Jehovahs witnesses' don't believe in blood transfusions...I know that much.

It seems like they really didn't belong to any large christian religion. The article states they just had a small bible study group.

The parents need to be lock in a mental institution and this police chief needs to be fired if he thinks these kids aren't in danger. The girl was sick for a month and only getting sicker, yet the parents did nothing besides praying?!?! That's a dangerous enviroment, this guy isn't doing his job. I'd love to live in this town, could probably go 90 mph down the streets, when I get pulled over, just say no one got hurt so it really wasn't dangerous right?
