Glee Episode V: The Sylvester Strikes Back - - - - - Part 14

Glee may very well be one of the worst written shows in the history of television.

FOX has decided to finally open their mouths on this drama. They state that Naya isn't fired and is still under contract for the show. Now if they actually use her is a different question.

All the glorious shade in the world from Colfer!
TVLINE | How long have you been planning to write your episode?
I never wanted to do this, or gave any indication that I wanted to do it. It’s not my world, these aren’t my characters and I thought I’d hate tampering with it or ruining it. But then they came to me and said, “Would you be interested in writing an episode? We want you to.” It was an opportunity that I could not turn down.

TVLINE | Can you set it up for us? What’s it all about?
Everyone knows I’m a very selfish writer, so the main storyline is about Kurt being down on his luck and looking for something to validate him as a performer. He ends up joining an assisted living home’s production of Peter Pan, and something happens to the woman playing Peter, so he has to fill in. The biggest compliment I got from the crew and the cast when the script came out was that it reminded them of a Glee episode from Season 1. And we got some amazing people to be in it.

TVLINE | Yeah, let’s talk about those amazing people.
June Squibb, Tom Conway and Billy Dee Williams; I was shocked. I never expected that we’d get names like that, especially June Squibb, coming [off of] an Oscar nomination. I have to say, June blew me away. People need to watch this episode just for her performance. At 83 years old, she was on her feet 14 hours a day, singing and dancing and keeping up with the rest of us. She was just impressing everyone around her. She was incredible, and I hope she gets the recognition she deserves. She blew all of us away.

TVLINE | What was most important for you to get across in the episode?
I wanted it to be very much like classic Glee. I wanted to do a story about underdogs; I think that’s why we have such a passionate audience, because it was a show about a group of kids that had never had something represent them before. My two favorite things in life are animals and old people, so I definitely wanted to incorporate both of those into the story.

TVLINE | Was there anything you wanted to do, but couldn’t for whatever reason?
They only gave me two guidelines when they gave me the job: I couldn’t break up with Blaine and I couldn’t kill anyone. They really gave me so much freedom with this. I was terrified going into it. I didn’t know what to expect, and I didn’t know if I’d be able to tell the story I wanted to tell, but the writers gave me so much room to play with. It was an incredible experience.

TVLINE | So we shouldn’t expect Kurt to break up with, then murder, Blaine?
No, no that won’t happen in this episode. Maybe Season 6, but the blood won’t be on my hands. That’ll be someone else’s episode.

TVLINE | How do you feel about where they are now, and where they could go from here?
They’re very young and they’re engaged, so I’m not sure where they’ll go after. Engagement is already a pretty big step. I’m very lucky that’s not in my hands.

TVLINE | Do you know if you’ll be back full-time next year?
I have absolutely no idea. I have heard very little about what’s going on with Season 6, so I have no idea.

TVLINE | Ryan Murphy recently said something huge happens that sends everyone on a different path. Can you elaborate?
Season 5 has a really nice conclusion that I think our audience is going to be really happy with. It sends every character on their own way, which will open up the door to a lot of possibilities in Season 6, depending on what they want to do with it. Every character gets a good send-off.

TVLINE | What are your hopes for Kurt’s future, generally speaking?
Selfishly, I had so much fun working with June, Tim and Billy Dee, I hope he has a future in the assisted living home that I created. But I just want to see him happy. I hope to see him find validation within himself. I think that would be a great lesson for the kids watching, that you have to find approval and happiness within yourself. You don’t get it from someone else.

Colfer's interviews are always hilarious. You don't have to do much reading between the lines of his thinly-veiled snark to know A) he's totally over Klaine, and B) he is perfectly aware of how ridiculous this show is.

Meh. She's hot and all, but everything about her anymore screams that she's trying way too hard and kind of desperate for attention.

Her and Kevin hanging out in Cabo being cute together

I wouldn't mind if she took some time off from the fashion shoot life and focus on her acting/music.

I miss her so much I weep sometimes. :csad:

Jane was on The Talk today and they asked her about the finale since it is suppose to be big and she was like "I am not in the next two episodes so I have no idea" I got a good laugh out of that.

My reaction to this episode.

It was....good? Refreshing? Kind of sorta maybe old school 5 years later? All the characters were enjoyable. All the plots were clear and to the point and didnt seem jumbled for once.

I am assuming that the only reason Santana would be in the recording studio is because Mercedes is trying to get her a deal.

It is pretty sad that Chris had to write an episode in order for him to actually be able to do something. This is the most Kurt has done since Season 3.

Sad that this is Nayas last episode for lord knows how long.

The fact that Glee squanders Chris and Naya the way they do....smh.

Colfer definitely has a thing for animals and old people. They're major recurring themes in his writing. He also just adopted a dog IRL, in addition to his cat he adopted a while ago.

Not crazy about Naya's blond hair.

Sam the Dog Whisperer. He's so much more attractive these days than just a few episodes ago. Amazing the difference a good haircut makes.

lol @ the glimpse of Rachel's dog website.

Santana would probably actually make a good publicist. I miss Naya already.

Yay Colfer took two seconds to give throwaway explanations where Elliott and Dani went, which is more effort than we get from the other writers.

St. Hummel brings meaning back to the old folks' lives with the power of song! Not surprising Colfer's gonna write a Kurt-centric episode, but I can hear his haters giving a collective eyeroll right now. Chris sang "Memory" nicely though. His voice can be hit-or-miss, but this one suited it well.

Would paparazzi really care about Rachel?

Oh Rachel, with the giant army of dogs you're trying to walk and your friends strategically placed to pose as random bystanders spontaneously gushing over you on the street. I love/hate your ridiculousness. I also enjoyed the dogs dragging you down the street.

Kurt had good intentions with meeting Clara, but he was overstepping about things he didn't know anything about, and I don't blame her for showing him the door.

Damn, Naya, you scrawny. She looked a lot better last season when she had some meat on her bones. Although I'm enjoying Santana the Machiavellian publicist. She fits right in. Too bad God knows when we'll ever see her again.

Colfer makes kind of a hot Peter Pan. I'm not sure how I feel about thinking that, but there it is.

Could the resolution of the Maggie/Clara mini-subplot have been any more trite and predictable. Of course she'll refuse but then "surprisingly" show up for opening night. We've seen this before with Mike Chang's dad and Quinn's mom. And then of course they're all happily ever after, when a more realistic conclusion would have had Clara tentatively taking a first step to reaching out to Maggie and then going from there.

lol @ Colfer's comment about skinny jeans though.

I'm sure this episode being Blaine/Klaine-lite is gonna confirm some people's thoughts about how Colfer hates Darren and/or Klaine. Although he did give them one short and sweet little moment.

Honestly, considering how snarky Colfer has always come across, he wrote a sappier episode than I would have expected, to the point of being a little trite and corny at times, and also definitely went into St. Hummel territory.

I did like his attempts to call Rachel out, and to get Kurt some independence, but I won't hold my breath for the regular writers to continue anything he may have tried to start here.

Overall, I'd say a pretty average episode. Definitely not a bad episode, but not really anything that stands out.

Looks like Glee has moved to mid season/2015 for its final season and most likely wont be getting those 24 episodes that RM wanted.

lol @ "everyone on Glee"

I do hope they at least allow Murphy enough episodes to bring it to the ending he wants though.

If nothing else, it should be allowed to end rather than be abruptly cut off.

I think Santana/Mercedes/Kurt are the only ones not played out at this point. They need a spinoff.

And I think Fox will give RM as many episodes as he wants he could get 22 eps if be wanted though with how they write this show 3 would be enough since Rachel is already at her endgame.

Those three might be less played out than the rest, but they're definitely played out. They're just not enough for me to muster up any enthusiasm for this show at this point.

As for a spinoff...

When this mess is done, I think it's best everyone goes their separate ways.

Why, what did they do? The whole teacher thing?
