Gliese 581g, the most Earth-like planet found so far

The Bible was written at a time where I'm not even sure they knew of other planets, so there is no reason to reveal the possible existence of extraterrestrial life to them.
That motivation seems awfully human. With respect to the creation account, the Bible doesn't really offer much room for amendments. What you need to understand is that what God supposedly gave us in the Bible is pretty much it. That means that God knew that we'd be stuck with a static text for thousands of years. So how about NOW?

Should this conversation be moved?

Honestly, I don't get the excitement of this planet, since it's 20 lightyears away. With current technology it would take 500,000 years for any space probe we have to reach it. Until we invent some radical new technology like folding which can allow for faster than light travel, this planet is just a rock out in space. A very interesting rock, but a rock none the less.

Mars, on the other hand, we can reach with only 2 months of space travel. There are also moons around Jupiter and Saturn that are somewhat earth-like in their size.

You people are aware that the Bible is just a collection of stories right? It's more of an anthology of old tales passed down from generation to generation put together much later by monks who didn't have much else better to do with their time. I don't know where people get this idea that, like, God whispered the words into the brains of the dudes that put it down on paper. They just collected a bunch of other writings and put it together in an order fitting the views they wanted to put across.

Most of those guys were prophets and philosophers. We all know they were high!

Naw. A lot of philosophers were heavy drinkers and druggies, where else did they get their "inspirations"

Never said that they weren't.

You didn't not say that they were. :o

Anyway, I wasn't talking to you. I was referring to this:

Actually a ship with a 10- to 20-megawatt VASIMR engine could propel human missions to Mars in just 39 days.

I want to send a crate of Oreos to Mars and see what happens.

I want to send a crate of Oreos to Mars and see what happens.

The life there, subsisting wholly on Oreos, would soon pass our level of evolution, culture and technology and arrive here within a few years as our new overlords.

As long as they're shape-shifting telepaths, I'm cool with that.

I don't know, I tend not to pay attention to what crazy people think.

Is this really necessary? How about getting back on topic, instead of insulting people for their religious beliefs?

what if we get there eventually, and we find out that the atmosphere makes us sterile or turns us purple or something?

Folks...the religion bashing and religious intolerance on here is getting out of hand....stop it now.

The only example I saw of that was Anubis' post. Are you implying that it was elsewhere?

The fact that a thread about a new planet even turned into a religious debate is what gets me.

How every other thread turns into a debate about how Obama is doing or what Nolan ate for breakfast.
