I was looking at Spidey stuff on Wiki, and I noticed a strange trend. We start with the death of Gwen Stacy on the bridge at the hands of Green Goblin in Amazing #121. Milestone issue. Then we get to the various adaptations of Spider-Man...

First, the 90's cartoon: Because of some censorship crap, the writers aren't allowed to have Gwen in there at all because they'd have to kill her. So they do a thing where Green Goblin kidnaps Mary Jane instead. There's a fight on the bridge, MJ is pushed off the side and falls into a dimensional portal and vanishes. Doesn't die.

Then there's Ultimate Spider-Man. Issue #25, Green Goblin kidnaps MJ again instead of Gwen. There's a fight on the bridge, and MJ goes over the side. Spidey webs her to safety, she might be dead, but she's fine. Doesn't die.

Finally there's the first Spider-Man movie. Again, Green Goblin kidnaps MJ instead of Gwen (who hasn't been introduced yet). There's a big fight on the bridge, MJ goes over, but Spidey rescues her. Doesn't die.

How wierd. Why does MJ keep ending up on that bridge and walking away alive? At least Bendis had the stones to actually kill Gwen later on.

They're making another Spider-Man cartoon for next year. To the writers: Can you please get Gwen on that bridge? Or at least keep MJ off it?

I think the problem is that due to the popularity of the movie, the new show will tend to emulate whats already transpired in the flick.
A new generation came to believe that is how the mythos goes, and all a sudden if kids saw the origin on the new show with Gwen on the bridge, they'd figure it was wrong.

Its all about adapting 40 odd years of history into a little package. I think ignoring Gwen in most situations was a smart thing since most of the other Spidey projects you mentioned were for newer and younger audiences who would get turned on to the regular comics which do not feature Gwen.

y'know, I understand that. I do. and I would actually be okay with it... if 99% of the time they didn't come up with something that pales in comparison to the original. there's always that feeling that it could've been SO much better.

It depends on degree level. Organic webshooters and actual uniformity among X-Men uniforms was no big deal, but Dr. Doom's changes was just stupid. (coming from someone who was on board with the 5th astronaut idea).

Good news... I'm hoping to launch a live action Spider-Man series in the future sometime. If it's able to get off the ground, Gwen- not MJ- will play a big role in it and part of it will revolve around that bridge sequence. We will probably hint to it in the PILOT and then see it take place in the finale just as it did with the comics. So, if it gets off the ground- you'll have your throwing Gwen off of the bridge sequence.

For a young property it's a risk to develop a character and quickly kill them off, especially if you have baggage of Captain Stacy to go through first. Man.

But the moment is so awesome, it's hard to not to at least pay homage to it with a bridge scene that is similar.

That's how I think it goes down. I don't think any of those cases involves copying off the others... but leaving out Gwen and still paying homage to the bridge scene with MJ just makes too much production sense...

Well in cartoons there are things you can't do, one is have a psychopath kill a young woman by throwing her off a bridge.
So I don't think we will see that in this cartoon either, unless its like Hellboy cartoons where they swear and talk about death and show death a ton.
But I think Marvel will try to appeal to as many fans as possible.
Spider-Man has hundreds about millions of children who are fans.

Plus fans of the movie will expect to see certain things, like MJ and Peter together. You can't have Peter and Gwen together, fans of the movie will be lost.
But if they did have Gwen almost get killed on the bridge by Green Goblin (who fans would also wonder why he isn't dead) she could nearly die but get saved and then want nothing to do with Peter or MJ.
Peter looses her, but she doesn't have to die.

that is the most hillarious thing I've read today, and proof that sometimes the simplest explanations for things are propbably usually correct.

Well most audiences know MJ and not Gwen regardless of what medium they watch it in. People who watched the Spider-Man cartoon know MJ (was Gwen even in it?) The movies have MJ and MJ is still around in the comics.

Gwen's been dead in regular Marvel continuity for decades now. Other than the tossing her off a bridge she's kind of pointless to have since we have MJ.

And I know she's not "pointless" but I'm hoping you know what i mean.
