Godzilla (2014) - - - Part 12

I read a couple of reviews that opened my eyes to this thing a bit. I've now seen it twice and I really like it. It's a modern day B-movie and I don't think that's registering with some people. Everything from it's characters to it's pacing were exactly on point with mostly all the other Godzilla movies. Put this next to any other Godzilla sequel and it fits right in. Even the music has that old school serial monster movie sound. I mean, the very opening credits sets the mood for the entire film.

I don't think it's fair though, how everyone is raging on Aaron Taylor-Johnson when Bryan Cranston was so SO over the top. If he was in the movie more, all he would have done is SCREAM some more. That's all he did. I get people like him because of their love for Breaking Bad, but give credit where it's due. He was just as cheesy as Watanabe (but delightfully so).

8/10

It will be interesting to see how this film does next week.

Saw it for the second time last night with some of my buddies, and the one's who tried to take it as a very serious film liked it, but not nearly as much as the few of us who knew what we were in for, a movie where a giant creature fights other giant creatures. I think some people were expecting a very serious movie, which I don't think is what we got or what the director was aiming for.

I honestly can't remember the last time I've disagreed so harshly with people about a film.

It literally feels like people saw something entirely different. People are describing the film as dull or plotting with nothing happening which makes no sense as the film LITERALLY moves from intense set piece to set piece. The first act is the only act that's "slow" in the film. And really, there is only one true "tease" in the film.

This is an honest to goodness old school monster film that relishes mood, atmosphere, suspense and tension over blowing something up every 10 minutes. The more people yell about what they want from films, the more I think they have no clue what they want.

Really? The movie felt incredibly serious to me.

It just seems that the norm or expectation for movies like this or the plethora of CBM's nowadays is that they are emotional, completely story driven films that should shoot for Oscars. I had a ton of fun watching this film and completely enjoyed the ride during both of my viewings. I respect everyone's opinion and can see how people were a little put off by the human characters or lack of screen time for the big man. But at the end of the day this is a monster film, and I feel like we got a superb one. I don't know what some others were expecting.

That's the most sophisticated justification of a bland leading character that took up 2/3 of a movie craigdbfan. Almost convinced me. Then I remembered Jaws. And Alien. And jurassic Park. Managed to have great human characters along the creatures.

QFT

This summarizes the chief failing of this film. There is nothing wrong with focusing on the human drama of a monster movie. However, to do so and get away with little screen time for the monster, one must have a compelling narrative for the human cast. So many films have done a far superior job of delivering such a narrative. Godzilla 2014 is not one of those films.

I think they did just fine with Ford and the human characters.

Jaws, Alien, and Jurassic Park are all monster movies, but they don't have to deal with the scale of a film like this. Yes, all of these films have a small core of characters that we focus on throughout the film along with the monsters, but those other films are a small group of people versus the monsters, Godzilla is three giant monsters fighting throughout a city and the entire world is at stake instead of a crew on spaceship, 20 people on an island, etc. It's a lot easier to care about the characters when they are the direct prey of the monsters. That is not the case with Godzilla, the Mutos and Godzilla are never directly trying to kill humans, unless you count when the Mother Muto gets into a staredown or two with ATJ.

Yeah I can't find a point were it became dull or boring, I was tensed the entire time.

Saw it for a 2nd time last night, still loved it. I really love the audience reactions after G's first reveal/roar and of course the atomic breath. I think I'm gonna try to see it one more time before X-Men this Friday.

So yeah... Godzilla vs. Pacific Rim in Summer 2017? Yeah..

yeah...

pls.... :csad:

Same, it all flowed perfectly for me. The teases were great too. Made that final battle so much more powerful. As opposed to if we had seen the two previous fights fully. It wouldn't have the same impact.

Anyone else totally in love with Godzilla's roar plus the ensuing noise afterwards that was at the end of every trailer? My favorite film sound effect in a long time.

Going to see this in a few hours in IMAX 3D.

I've heard the 3D is nothing basically, but I want to see it on the biggest screen and loudest sound system possible.

As long as the 3D doesn't DETRACT from the experience I'll be ok.

Damn those glasses though, lol.

I normally actively avoid 3D but couldn't with this one because of IMAX. It's fine, not distracting at all and isn't used a ton but is pretty cool for perspective in a couple of scenes.

Yeah the 3D was ok in some parts but it's overall unnoticeable.
