Sci-Fi Godzilla Minus One

I cannot wait to see this film! I've heard more than one person claim this is the best Godzilla film yet. Thats a bold statement, but I'm looking forward to finding out myself!

One thing I loved about Minus One is that apart from the homages to the 1954 film there were also a few nods to Hollywood films.

That scene with Godzilla chasing the boat was an amazing homage to Jaws. This one is more of a stretch but I definitely got Star Wars vibes from the plan to defeat Godzilla in the third act with Shikishima being a savior not unlike Luke Skywalker destroying the Death Star.

Last but not least there seemed to be a couple of nods to Christopher Nolan. The tugboats showing up at the end to save the day was reminiscent of Dunkirk and the ol' last minute ejector seat trick that Shikishima used (and how it was foreshadowed) reminded me of The Dark Knight Rises.

Jaws definitely, but I see where you are coming from. I have no doubt more modern Hollywood cinema influenced Yamazaki's style and direction here.

$1.2 million (-59%) Monday. Very good hold. On track to break the record for a live action Japanese language release in North America tomorrow.
I'm hoping they at least get a 3x multiplier domestic, though that might be aiming a bit too high.

Now Certified Fresh at 97%.

IMHO nominations for Best Foreign Language Film AND Best Picture. I have no problem stumping for that right now.

Word of mouth is going to make this movie a good chunk of change

And Toho has made some of the worst. you are looking at roughly a 33 film history versus 5 films.
Agreed. The Toho lineage has a lot of stinkers. None of the Monsterverse films even come close to Godzilla's Revenge or Son of Godzilla awful. But yes, by that same token they haven't approached Gojira or Minus One either

When Goji appears on Odo Island it had Jurassic Park vibes.

Bit of an update for me:

I found out that Minus One is playing at my local Landmark Cinemas in my town after looking it up online! So excited to see this really soon, as I was worried this wouldn’t be the case.

Glad for you, Pennywise. Hope you enjoy the movie, dude. :like:

Meanwhile, I will continue to dwell in my pit of sadness because apparently Toho hates most Europeans.

It would be awesome if it got extended to the holiday week.
I heard some rumors that apart of the Toho/Legendary contracts is that both cannot release a Godzilla film in the same year. So GMO will be out of theaters by Dec 31.

But yeah if it gets extended through X-Mas would be legit. Though its going to lose some IMAX screens to Aquaman 2.

Man, I really want to see this, but I got so much personal stuff going on right now that I don't know when I'll be able to make time for it, but hopefully I get to see it before it leaves theatres here in the states.

I want to experience this bad boy on the bigscreen as it should be.

Caught this finally and really enjoyed it. Rock solid monster movie. Really strong emphasis on likable human characters that you root for which was a fresh approach. Big G himself was fearsome when he did appear and his destruction had impact and had weight to it.

Whenever he used his atomic breath, LAWD you FELT that s***! And thats all due to deft filmmaking and sound design.

I personally am still partial to Godzilla 1984 as my favorite ( I have to rewatch it though) but this was a really good movie.
