Sci-Fi Godzilla Minus One

One of my favourite shots in the film, and now in cinema in general, is
the upward shot of Godzilla as the tanks fire upon him when he attacks Ginza. When the smoke clears just enough for his head to pop out, the look on his face genuinely scared me. It's like he's thinking, "Are you guys serious right now? Fine, here's what real power looks like."

Saw this last week and loved it.

The whole "who cares about humans i came to see the monster action" excuse never resonated with me and this movie further drove that point home.

Really looking forward to picking this up on 4k (hope there's a Criterion) and for a sequel

Jusr found out Minus One is coming out here in December 28th and I'm a very happy camper. :D

$734k yesterday. Brings the WW number to $78.7 million, passing Shin Godzilla, at least per BOM numbers, to become Toho’s highest grossing Godzilla movie.

Still a shot at 50 domestic. Should be 45-46 after the holiday weekend. See if it can get there after. I dont know how long it will hang around in January but there’s not much coming out so we can hope.

I do wonder how it is doing in Japan in terms of the yen. Because of the current exchange rates, It makes a few comparisons a bit off.

It’s made about half of Shin in Japan. The exchange rate has shifted in favor of the dollar by about 20%, so that’s some of it but not all. I think Shin just hit a sweet spot with a Japanese audience sick of its government‘s perceived fumbling of Fukushima. Satire and comedy famously don’t travel well. I’d argue Minus One is a better way forward for Toho internationally, but they may still have something to build on at home with Shin.

Toho has stated their intentions on doing more with Godzilla internationally, thus the bigger release than Shin abroad.

It is interesting to compare Shin to GMO. Shin made $75.4 Million in Japan domestically, while GMO is at $32.4 Million. There's a lot of factors to consider, but I do think Anno directing Shin and being so soon after Fukushima it resonated and grasped Audiences more. THAT Being said...GMO's story, characters, writing etc are SOOOO much better than Shin. Oh well I like em both.

But its great to see GMO continuing to just stomp at the Box Office. We're at 43.3 million domestic, and hell if we can get to $47ish by the end of the month/year that's pretty damn great. I do think we're just a little too shy to hit $50 million

Saw this yesterday pretty late so i was too tired to post anything but man, WOW, that is a ****ing Godzilla movie right there.
Its everything i've always wanted from a Godzilla movie and much more, how can i even go back to Legendary's version? That one is so sauceless (cool design tho ngl) and i doubt that Monarch show is THIS good.

Crazy thought, but it's possible to enjoy different versions of Godzilla.

One thing to keep in mind, is that the current conversion rate is sort of skewing how well it is doing in relation to Shin.

I was hoping to go see this after getting a couple of gift cards for Christmas but the only theater that is showing it only has one showing at 10:10 PM. I didn't get a chance earlier because of Christmas spending but oh well I'll buy the 4k/Blu Ray when it comes out.

Nice job Mexico! 1.4m OW last weekend, up to 1.9 today. WW now over 85.

If Toho had done a dub for the U.S. and had a competent OS rollout strategy I’d bet this would be over 100 by now. Oh well, still a great performance.

More and more people have been embracing subtitles in recent years, and not just for foreign movies. I know people who turn on subtitles even when the movie/show is already in English because it keeps their attention more focused. I don't think an English dub would have made much difference in box office here. Aside from that I would hate to lose half of those performances to dubbing. Keep it in Japanese, I say.

I’m totally fine with subtitles and I also turn on subtitles even for English language movies sometimes because I’m an old. But theatrically they are still a hard no for plenty of people who feel having to read the dialogue takes them out of the film. Heron got it right with the option. I would very much like to see the split on that film of sub v dub.
