I've been getting into DC comics more and more lately, and I was just wondering if anybody had suggestions on particularly good miniseries or story arcs I could look into getting, especially of Batman and/or Superman? I'm not really looking to buying into the whole mainstream of DC, I just don't want to spend that much money, but just small, good miniseries, story arcs or one shots that I would might enjoy based on what I already know of the characters.

Well, my personal favorite Superman stories include:

Superman: For All Seasons

For The Man Who Has Everything

Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow?

Greg Rucka's run on "The Adventures of Superman" (even though the villains kind of sucked)

Of course you have to get into Dark Knight Returns, Batman Year One, Kingdom Come, Superman Secret Identity, of course Watchmen is under DC (unless you mean DCU as in Batman and co.). I think Batman Arkham Asylum (by Grant Morisson, is really good). Infinite Crisis was good, the hardcover printing is very high-quality.

Identity Crisis is where I started. That gives you a good jump into some great teen titans and flash stories. ah the good old days.

The current Sinestro Corps crossover is kicking ass right now.

Here are some of the greatest DC stories ever told. First off, know that Watchmen is probably the greatest comic book ever written and that you'd need it even if you weren't a comic book fan. Aside from that, here's the list:

The Killing Joke

The Dark Knight Returns
Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth
Snow
The Man Who Laughs

Yes, I have to go with grabbing all of the current Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps books to lead into the Sinestro Corps.

Everything Mark Waid ever wrote for the Flash before his current arc is excellent. Johns' Flash run is also good.

Yeah, if you go by great writers, you'll usually come upon exclusively brilliant stuff. Mark Waid, as was previously mentioned, Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, etc., are all such writers.

I don't see why everyone raves over Dark Knight Returns, Kingdom Come and Batman Year One.

They were kinda meh to me.

Right now though, Sinestro Corps is the only thing you really should be buying. Blue Beetle is fun, as is Dini's Batman, but most of the other stuff is kinda meh right now.

I'm not a huge fan of Dark Knight Returns either, but it is essential.

How is Countdown bad?

Would Countdown get you into comics? May as well pick it up though, stay up to date, and learn what it is like to have a really averae book on your pull list.

It's not that bad. And Jason Todd is a cool character when used right.

It's only bad if you don't have the money to buy every single DC book out there to see the payoffs which are set up but never contained in countdown.

You're just in denial. One day the truth will dawn on you, just as it dawned on that majority of comic fans who called in to have the little bastard put down in the first place. :)

Nah, and I voted to keep him alive. I like the idea of a Batman a little further over the deep end. His Red Hood appearences were awesome, and I liked him as Bats on the alternate Earth.

So nyah.
