Anyone got any? And I don't mean tecno...and there can be vocals, but a a rare use of them.

check out the band "godspeed you black emporer". phenominal instrumental band. very epic and cinematic quality to their music.

Joe Satriani
Steve Vai
Eric Johnson
Yngwie Malmsteen
John Petrucci

Frank Zappa does some excellent instrumentals

The Shut up and Play Your Guitar CD set is excellent.

Any specific songs you guys fancy?

Shut up 'N Play Yer Guitar -- Frank Zappa
Song Title and the Album Title as well so it may be hard to find

Most zappa Instrumental stuff is awesome. MOst are hidden in albums that have lyric songs as well though. Although you can also get London Symphony Orch Playing Zappa which is cool!

That too. also good,

Godspeed is also okay.

I find that a lot of soundtracks have great instrumentals... Star Wars or Star Trek for example.

Rodrigo y Gabriela did a cover of Metallica's "Orion" using classical guitars, and the original is just as good

Tortoise makes awesome instrumentals too

Turing Machine is trippy stuff too

If you just want to rock out, go for "Surfing With the Alien" by Joe Satriani.

otis spann

I could go on, but I'd get tired writing down all of the blues legends that should be common knowledge to anyone familiar with the word "music".

Overture 1928, Hell's Kitchen, The Dance Of Eternity by Dream Theater.

Jon & Vangelis - The Friends of Mr. Cairo (among others)

yo la tengo has a lot of good instrumentals. i've always liked "sandusky" by uncle tupelo.

Rush - YYZ

Edgar Winter Group - Frankenstein

Dream Theater - Ytse Jam

Faith No More - Woodpecker from Mars

Pink Floyd - Marooned

Both albums by Liquid Tension Experiment

you should check out Mars Volta . . . they're prog rock, but most of their stuff is transient instrumentals and harmonies . . . good stuff . . .

another thing that comes to mind, although not necessarily 'instrumental' is the soundtrack from the movie Snatch . . .

Seconding anything and everything by Booker T and the MGs. Amazing group.

There's plenty of great progressive rock instrumentals. I like Emerson Lake & Palmers versions of Pictures at an Exhibition, Fanfare for the Common Man, the Maple Leaf Rag, (Aaron Copland's) Hoedown, hell, any originally orchestral piece they did.
