Good third movies, do any exist?

what is it about the number THREE that turns good franchises to ****?

off the top of my head I can only think of a few good third movie

1. toy story 3
2. back to the future 3
3. return of the king (although I hated the multiple endings)
4. harry potter and the prisoner of azkaban

and then I'm struggling.

With regards to Batman Forever, Just because it made more money does not make it a better movie than Batman Returns.

How did "Scream 3" get mentioned twice in this thread before "Army of Darkness"? Even "X-Men: The Last Stand" was better than "Scream 3".

techically army of darkness is number 2 as evil dead 2 is pretty much an exact remake of evil deal 1

I think where number 3 normall goes wrong is because they want to do BIGGER and better without it necessarily serving the story, too many plotlines, too many characters (see SM3) and if you ask me nolan is falling into the same trap.

I didnt like Alien 3 for a long time but it has grown on me. Its an interesting move to have the hero struggling against a completely hopeless situation. Yeah I know that all movies try to have that kind of feeling but this one really captures it. They actually kill off the hero.

For a while anyway.

Return of the Jedi is strong, just next to empire looks worse than it is.
I didn't care for Toy Story 3. Rush hour 3 is...well stale version of Rush Hour 1.
Last Crusade is the only Jones movie I like.
Scream 3 sucks until Sid shows up back in Hollywood and even then it gets by as half way decent.

Spider-man 3...... what are we smoking here kids?

And yes, I'm gonna be "that guy" that calls it pre-maturely,

I think this is based on a consensus, not 'going against the grain'.

Usually, in trilogies, they put some much effort into the second film that by the third, they ran out of juice or don't know how to end it.

With that said, Die Hard with a Vengeance is the best Die Hard sequel. Return of the Jedi is weaker than Empire but still creditable.

Christmas Vacation

Almost as good as the first, in my opinion.
