Grand Theft Auto V (A.K.A 5) - Part 1

I don't think an expansion pack can do a whole city justice though.
Yeah, I'm thinking with the scale that GTA V is supposed to have, I don't know how they would be able to add even more and still have it feel relevant, not to mention how long it would take to create a new city. Although a direct sequel could be fun, sort of like in a "San Andreas Stories" kind of way.

I can't say that I am entirely crazy about three characters, but I will see where it goes. That being said, as much as I want to go to Vice City next....I really don't to return to VC nor do I want another multi-city game. All that I want is GTA: Capitol City. So much can be done with a Washington D.C. type of environment.

An expansion could add a playable female character, that would be pretty great.

As to the next location, I'm kind of hoping for a multiple city type deal. Maybe not so you can drive from to the other, but a plane ride a loading screen later you could find yourself in whatever the GTA equivalent of Tokyo is. An American, a European and an Eastern city would all be pretty awesome on the next gen's first GTA title.

Yeah, its kind of weird that they didn't make one of the main three characters in this a female.

Yeah, I know people here have been asking for a game set in San Francisco in the 70's, but I wonder if Rockstar will only use their three cities, or if they would plan on expanding that universe in a new game. It's really unsure at this point because many felt they would do another game based in LA after doing LA Noire and Midnight Club, but here they are with Los Santos.

Speaking of Midnight Club, they said the cars would handle better and feel more like a racing game, which makes me wonder how much they took from Midnight Club. I never really played it but I wonder how they would balance a realistic feel with a racing car feel.

1970s SF would be awesome! either that, or have it set in Liberty City. pretty much a NYC setting in the 70s with inspiration from films such as Taxi Driver and Goodfellas.

though SF would be a different environment than what we have gotten. the whole hippie culture and taking cues from Dirty Harry and Zodiac would be sweet!

someone mentioned Las Vegas and i think that would be awesome as well. though they would have to add a lot more than just the strip, casinos, etc. to match it with Liberty City and San Andreas.

It really is. Almost seems like a rather large missed opportunity, unless they are actually planning for a female character to arrive in DLC. It's not like other mediums where female protagonists have a hard time being popular. Arguably, video games more so than any format welcome heroines with open arms. I see no reason this couldn't work in GTA, especially with the clever writers are Rockstar behind it.

I dunno....the whole franchise is notoriously misogynistic, and so are its players in general. Trying to sell a realistic heroine to the Budweiser 'n' Spike TV crowd of Bros Before Hos would be pretty difficult, to say the least. Maybe if they made her into a lesbian pornstar action hero, it would sell.

It must have something to do with it making the cut scenes more difficult, like maybe the computer characters always have to refer to the playable character as a "him" or "he." And getting the voice actors to do two different scripts is too overwhelming.

I'm not sure what you mean. The voice actors wouldn't have to anything extra if one of the protagonists was female.

I think this all just depends on whether or not the want to break the mold and go out of their three big cities. I mean, VC was a period piece and so was SA, since it was based more on the whole West Side gang culture. But with GTA V, they look to be bringing it back to the present, so who knows whether they will want to do the same with Vice City or just do something completely different altogether,

Yeah, I mentioned this a while back that there aren't that many females in the series. Just looking at GTA IV, most of the women are there just for you to date or have sex with. The only "strong" female was Elizabeta, who didn't last too long since she was arrested. But they've never really had a badass female in the series that you can root for. And I doubt they want to go with the whole "classic Lara Croft" kind of female because it turns more into a cliche than an original character.

DC is kind of a different criminal. Not that Rockstar probably would have any problems about going into politics, but it's quite different from the other games.

Having said that, personally, I'd like to see some radical period piece, like say, the Northeast in the 1930's (the era of public enemies). Or even something in a city like Shanghai or Hong Kong in that era.

But would those be GTA games or something more along the lines of RDR and La Noire?

Like RDR was initially dubbed as GTA in the Old West, but it proved to be way more than that, and LA Noire was assumed to have been a cop version of GTA but it was nowhere near that. So I can totally see them doing a gang-based game set in the 20's, but I don't see it being a GTA game. Also, I think Sleeping Dogs already took advantage of being a GTA-styled game set in Hong Kong, and for whatever reasons ,it hasn't sold well despite getting good reviews.

But with GTA set for 2013, I wonder what their next game will be in 2014 since they're released a big name title in each of the past few years. Perhaps we may see some more GTA V content (which I've heard is something they're already working on), or possibly some news regarding Agent.

Well that's debatable. The thirties would be fairly different from say, modern GTA settings, but you would still have sizable cities, and plenty of cars, and motorcycles. And a focus on crime and law enforcement.

Even though the last Red Dead game was set in the 1910's, it was set in the last days of the Old West. Which for the record, I found to be a really interesting / unique setting. But it's a very different world from say... New York City or Shanghai in the 1930's. For one thing we saw a couple of primitive cars, but we never got to drive any (weren't many paved roads either). Totally different theme / atmosphere.

Now setting wise that may be closer to LA Noire, but that had very different gameplay / focus.

Personally I think shifting the timeline would be much more preferable than moving the series to somewhere like Washington DC. We can pretty much write off L.A Noire because it wasn't truly developed by Rockstar anyway, it was put together by a notoriously and now defunct Australian company called Bondi. If Rockstar themselves were truly dedicated to creating a GTA style period piece, it would be something incredible.

As it is, I honestly believe the GTA series will continue being set in the modern day for the time being. Where they go with it is anybody's guess, but it doesn't really matter -it'll be awesome regardless.

I thought Red Dead was pretty awesome, at least in location and atmosphere.

Location and time period obviously makes a huge difference. Just compare Vice City in the 80's, to San Andreas in the 90's.

So, yeah, setting something in the era of prohibition in... let's say Liberty City would be pretty different, but it could be awesome too.

Rockstar definitely hasn't shown any reluctance to stage games anywhere post-WWII --- LA Noire was 1940s, and the GTA series has covered the 1960s on up til modern times, with one decade (so far) noticeably omitted: the 70s.

So if Rockstar goes "period" for their next project, I'd be willing to bet on the 70s over any other decade --- although there's still a strong chance they'll eventually return to the cash cow that was Red Dead.

And personally, if they *do* go all 70s on us, I still think that a new and unique setting to explore would be the American South in the 70s.....the Burt Reynolds/Dukes of Hazzard type era of hot rods, muscle cars, moonshine and homegrown.

Well with the 70s, there is Agent. I can't wait for that game when it gets released.

...Interesting choice. I'd be curious to see that.

The other era I could see them do is the 1920's, especially in light of Boardwalk Empire.

I prefer the 30's myself, since that was when the whole nation was focused on crime, with the public enemy era. The birth of the FBI, and the Great Depression and all that. Better guns and cars too.

LA Noire could've been so much better if they had some kind of focus on the mafia, or something similar to the upcoming film, Gangster Squad.

It's also important to remember that Rockstar draws heavy influence from many films and TV shows. Vice City had a lot of callbacks to Miami Vice and even some easter eggs from Scarface. Also, missions like the Bank Heist in GTA IV had nods to films various gangster and bank heist films. So when you think of movies made or based in the 70's, a big one that comes up is The Godfather. Now there's already made a game based on that film, and Mafia II also dealth with the team of the post world war mob, so I'm not sure if they would focus on that, but they could also add in some disco, a la Saturday Night Fever. Possibly even go the route of Taxi Driver, although that was sort of touched on in LA Noire.

I think the 70's were definitely one of the most influential decades on American Pop culture, so it seems like a right fit for Rockstar to go to next.

It's more of a question as to whether that game will ever come out at this point.

The 70's was also the height of Blaxploitation which I'm sure Rockstar could have a lot of fun with. Having on the protagonists be a cool Shaft-like fellow would be enormous fun.

one thing for sure though, i hope we don't have to wait another 5+ years for whatever GTA game comes out after GTA5

To me Vice City is as much about being set in the 80's as it is about the city itself. A 2010's vice city wouldn't cut it and would lose so much of what made the original vice city cool.

Frankly I kinda wish R* stopped with remaking cities in general and took us to new locations. Even for this game i'm a bit disappointed they didn't choose to go somewhere totally new.

I kind of agree about new cities but then again, with this city supposedly being bigger than Red Dead, GTA IV and San Andreas combined, I have a feeling we're still going to see something unprecedented in a GTA game, which is good enough for me

As much as I look forward to a larger city, gotta admit it's the country roads, and full ocean floor that have my attention atm. Going off road past country style buildings, and getting out of the city to go underwater sounds like it could be a much needed break from spending too much time in the city. That's one thing I wish IV had more of. Sometimes the city felt too much like more of the same, and it would have been nice for more changes of scenery.

The 3 characters sounds great as well. At first I was mixed on it, because I didn't want to collect everything 3x. However, now, I think it'll add a lot of replay value. Not to mention 3 different voice actors can break up the monotony.

I think the next thing I want to hear about now is multiplayer. I liked free mode in IV, but it was lacking a bit. Cruising around, getting into random gun fights online was fun, but there was no goal. I mean, everyone just kinda scattered, and only came together rarely, mostly at the airport. It would be nice if the free range mode had co-op side missions, and allowed others on the server to help on both sides. Like say, you accept a bank heist, and join the criminals. It happens real time in the city. The others in the city get a notice that the heist started, and can opt to help you, or help the cops.

One thing I def want to do though, get a boat like in Jaws, and go shark hunting with others :). Given that Red Dead had mountain lions, and (I'm pretty sure) their in the area surrounding where V is in the real world, they'll probably make a return as well.

Oh yeah, totally different note, but I hope V takes another note from Red Dead....zombies! Having an undead nightmare type mode in a sandbox modern city like V.../drools. Make it co-op and I'll be in heaven.

I'm pretty sure Congress passed a law in 2009 requiring ALL video games to have a zombie add-on.
