Fantasy Grayskull: Masters of the Universe - Part 3

In the original mini-comics, there was no Prince Adam identity. He-Man was just a nomadic barbarian who The Goddess gave the sword of power, weapons, and armor to protect from Skeletor.
I actually always preferred that version from the original mini comics to the Filmation version that introduced Prince Adam.

Yeah, the original mini-comics were basically like a more kid-oriented Conan the Barbarian mixed with the more high-tech sci-fi elements. They were a bit more pulpy and sword and sorcery-based.

I've always liked to see that material repurposed to show how King Grayskull got his start, but no version that I've seen ever gets that deep into the lore to make good use of it

We've been talking about this movie for 8 years now.

It's been longer than that. You can find threads going back to probably like 2004-2005-ish. The movie has been in varying states of development, to development hell, to development purgatory for about 20 years. The push basically started when the 2002 series was on the air on Cartoon Network. It's been through multiple directors, writers, and studios. I think part of the push to get it made is because the rights are supposedly reverting to NBCUniversal soon. Like supposedly NBCUniversal will basically own the media rights to He-Man, but it's very confusing.

But here's an example, John Stevenson at one point attached to direct when it was at Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver in 2009:

Predators writers Alex Litvak and Mike Finch were writing a draft in 2010:

McG in talks to direct it at one point:

So I think it went from Warner Bros. to Sony for a while then to Netflix, and then to Amazon MGM Studios.

Nice, I love Morena Baccarin, Charlotte Riley and James Purefoy. The rest of this cast is so good it almost might make me able to ignore Leto. Almost.

Still don’t understand the Goat Man thing.

I guess they needed someone scraping the bottom of the barrel like Blade or Karg or Saurod like in the 87 film so they gave us Goat Man.

Was there no-one of the gravitas of Frank Langella instead of Jared Leto? Someone like Mads Mikklesen would've worked well for Skeletor.

Its an obscure character. Technically gives them a bit more freedom than a more well known character, because the Goat Man fanboys aren't legion. On a more cynical note, it is cheap attempt to prove fanboy cred, pulling out an obscure glup ****to.

C'mon, no Dolph Lundgren?

IMHO Goat Man doesn't score fan cred with me. It makes no sense not to use a villain like Beast Man. Beast Man actually serves a more natural purpose as the master of the beasts of Skeletor.

oh god. The usual "taking a fantasy character and putting them in the real world to cut down on costs right before they go back to their fantasy world to save the day"

I knew they were doing it but now its real.
The funny thing is, the Masters Of The Universe movie already did this exact thing back in the 80's. :funny:

I have no faith in this given the current state of blockbusters in general.

At least they gave him the classic white/pink color scheme.

I don't think the whole movie is like this. I think it should only be the first act. Honestly, I'm keeping an open mind. If half the movie is set on Earth, I will be disappointed but I don't think that's the case.

Also, in most versions of Masters of the Universe, Queen Marlena originally comes from Earth. So it would make sense that He-Man could travel to Earth for his safety. From what it sounds like, Adam was transported to Earth as a child with no way to return home. And this movie is about him returning to Eternia to reclaim the kingdom.

Travis Knight's involvement gives me hope for this. IMHO he's earned the benefit of the doubt and an open mind. He co-wrote the script as well. The co-writer also wrote ParaNorman, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Missing Link. Like these are all green flags to me.

Usually, when these movies get made there are tons of red flags behind the scenes, and I think they've removed a lot of those. The Nee brothers are gone. Noah Centineo is gone. McG is gone. David Goyer is gone. Jeff Wadlow isn't involved in it either.

To me, the biggest problem is that He-Man's kind of a dated property now and most of the previous reboots have failed. There doesn't seem to be much anticipation or excitement for this movie. He-Man/MOTU is a very 1980s property, and I'm not sure it can be updated in a way that will satisfy modern audiences and longtime fans.

It worked out so well in the last He-Man movie, might as well do it again! Maybe they can even get the principal from Back to the Future to cameo! :o

Who wants to bet there will be a He-Man in a diner/pub scene?

I don't think it's going to be this because based on the synopsis that was in Variety, Adam crashes on Earth at age 10 and is stuck there for almost two decades.

Glad to hear Ram Man is in it. Although I think Goat Man will detract from him because people will think they're both animal themed, concerning goats and rams.

Hope to see Stratos in this too.
