Great movies that flopped at the box office

In mourning for Kick Ass, I make this thread.

Kick-Ass is a flop?

I thought its budget is only around $30 million.

But did Kick Ass really flop? It didn't do the $30 mill some people (absurdly) were projecting, but Lionsgate paid 25 million for it and it's an R-rated non-franchise film with, at best, a niche audience. The 19.7 million it'll probably open to isn't so bad.

Gattaca - I honestly think this is an all time sci-fi classic, I think it's better than Blade Runner, and I love BR. It flopped real bad, lol.

Zathura - I don't think it's a movie classic, but it's a very enjoyable kid's movie, and gets mucho kudos for sticking to practical effects when most filmakers these days would have went for the easier CGI route.

i think their marketing was beyond terrible...

they were hoping to get paranormal activity kind of word of mouth by having a million screenings... everyone who wanted to see the movie saw it for free a month early.

all the tvspots are of peoples reactions to the movie... "ive never had more fun watching the bad guys get slaughtered".."swoosh" .."kapow"

and the trailers were awful.. it sorta looked like a ridiculous kiddie movie with silly jokes (and that terrible song thats in every trailer/tvspot).. and yes even the red band.

I hope word of mouth helps Kick-Ass out. I really loved the movie and it's a shame that a turd like Clash of the Titans made about 20 times more than it.
