I tend to be more of a television/film sci-fi guy, as opposed to finding good Science fiction books. Anyone got any suggestions?

oh, you're looking to get into the book scene.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein
Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson
Dune by Frank Herbert

You might also try some Scott Sigler, if you want some science fiction mixed in with horror. Things tend to get a bit bloody. His website has his books as audiobooks (originally released as podiobooks) and 2 of them are available in print: Infected and Contagious.

The Time Machine and War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells

^Agreed. H.G Wells gave some of the BEST sci-fi stories. I recently read the island of Dr.Moreu (sp?) and it was great! I can imagine how creepy those creatures would look.

Time machine is my favorite though (I think the movie really screwed up the story)....Is it me or does anyone think Liam Nesson would be PERFECT for the time traveler?

No love for the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy?

Hyperion (and other books) by Dan Simmons

Can anyone suggest a Sci Fi book that doesn't involve intergalatic battles? It seems like every time I find a Sci Fi book, it always involves humans fighting off ridiculous looking aliens. I mean I wouldn't mind one that involved aliens, just a little more subtle and not "out there".

This one has space battles, but no aliens:

How rigidly do you define "science fiction"? Would you consider Firestarter by Stephen King to be science fiction? What about Frankenstein by Mary Shelley? If you're just looking for space-based scifi, Arthur C. Clarke has some awesome stories which don't involve intergalactic battles. William Gibson does as well.

^I just want to say that Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is truly the GREATEST book I have ever read my entire life. I highly HIGHLY recommend it to everyone

I wouldn't say it was the greatest, but it's definitely one of the best I've read.

It's a short story, but Ray Bradbury's A Sound of Thunder was amazing. Too bad it got turned into a ****** movie.

For short stories, Asimov's The Last Question and Arthur C. Clarke's The Nine Billion Names of God are both great. The Last Question is a particular favorite of mine.

The Mote in God's Eye, by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, is a classic. Dune is a beast.

more Firestarter I would say. I also like things that deal with the future. What's some of Arthur Clarke's best work?

Philip K. Dick is my recomendation.

Like... all of his stuff? I'm already considering Valis and Do Androids Dream in Electric Sheep, but are there others worth reading?
