I'm fairly certain the fact that almost everyone he knew and loved died had a little more to do with his insanity than the Gaurdians not giving him enough atention.

I thought Hal going crazy and killing lots of people was what caused the corps to get destroyed.

Hal went crazy because of the destruction of Coast City but because the Guardians not only offered him no help whatsoever to rebuild what he so hard defended, but they also showed him no simpathy and told him that they were going to revoke his status as a Green Lantern, Hal went further insane and destroyed the Green Lantern Corps.

I really liked GLC #1. I didn't really get into GL until Rebirth, now I'm hooked. I'd say as much as I always want to say Hal is my favorite GL, every time I read an issue with Guy, he does something to make me love him more. He was great in this issue and I can't wait to see him throughout.

I think it was brought up somewhere at some point in the years between the Corps' destruction and their eventual coming back that if the Guardians had been more understanding and more sympathetic towards Hal's plight instead of treating him like a whiney child, things might have turned out differently. He was kinda being a whiney child, and to be honest it probably wouldn't have turned out different no matter how much nicer they treated him, but the point remains that it was a sore spot for Ganthet throughout all these years.

And when Kyle was hanging out with Ganthet alone and with the baby Guardians, it looked like they were really working on it. Ganthet was much more open and emotive, curious about Kyle's personal life, and this even carried over to other titles like the JLA when he openly defied Guardians protocol and interfered to help John Stewart out in a pickle.

So when it seemed like the Corps were gonna be back, a lot of people assumed that the positive change in the Guardians' attitude would carry over again and we'd see a new, more positive GL Corps with more sympathetic Guardians and less little blue d!cks. But then Recharge came along and, if anything, the Guardians became even bluer and dickier than they were in the past! They don't even speak directly to Lanterns anymore, just assign dicktastic secretaries to do that for them.
