I really hope it does over a billion. One of the parrotings of the detractors during phase 1 is "Marvel can't succeed without Iron Man". Then after Guardians it became "Marvel can't gross one billion without RDJ" in it. of course this is idiotic but since Infinity War and HomeComing will have RDJ in it and they are both likely to gross the mark i really hope Guardians does to so they run out of excuses.

I'm going to go conservative (relative to everyone else!) and say 800-900. But a billion-plus would not shock me one bit. Everything looks fantastic so far.

Yeah, but Thor and CA had the Avengers effect going for them. Don't get me wrong, I think GotG 2 will outperform the first one (given it's of similar quality), but 1B is pretty steep. I seem to recall that it didn't do that well in China in part because the humor didn't translate well (Nothing goes over my head. My reflexes are too fast......).

There's a LOT of goodwill for the sequel so if it's good......

You doubted me when I said the first one would either get very close to a billion or possibly hit it. This will break a billion. ;)

The first one many nay-sayers decried the GA would never be onboard with a Tree and talking raccoon. Now we have baby Groot and Gunn under pressure to subvert the expectations for this sequel. Gunn is an amazing film maker so I have full faith he'll blow people's minds once again.

GOTG actually did very well in China. It earned $96 million there, while CATWS made $115 million in China earlier that summer. The first film wasn't released in China until October 10, 2014, a full two months after its domestic bow, which undoubtedly affected its gross there somewhat. Volume 2 has its domestic and Chinese openings on the same day, which may help its gross.

I haven't enjoyed the trailer footage for vol 2 as much as I did the first GotG, but I'm confident Gunn has produced a good entertaining movie. Whether it turns out great remains to be seen. I'll go for $850-900M WW.

It will do more than that. Box office had Dr Strange at 65-70 opening and it did 85. I can see Guardians going Beauty and the Beast opening which will 99% guarantee a billion.

I'm surprised there's even this much of a discussion. I think it's a lock for a billion.

Very few films are a lock for a billion.. The movie could fail to live up to expectations and lose it's momentum quickly. It will open big though.

100% sure it'll be over 1B. 1.2 billion is my guess.

I don't think a billion is in the bag at all. The potential is there, but I don't think there's more hype for this than there was CW or BvS, so it'll depend heavily on reviews and word of mouth I think.

$1B without breaking a sweat. Probably tops out at $1.3B.

What's in Vol. 2's favor domestically is that it's the biggest movie on the block until Memorial Day weekend. Fate of the Furious will have been out for three weeks, King Arthur will likely bomb and Alien Covenant, which will still probably do decent money, is rater R. I'm expecting a repeat of Beauty and the Beast's first few weeks where it's sitting comfortably at the top and maybe gets edged out on it's third weekend by Alien, but not by much.

I don't know if 1 billion is a lock but i would absolutely love for it to be the case. Marvel is the only company able to consistently hit billion films almost every year and they don't even hae their theoretical A-listers in their belt. It's insane

Batman v Superman opened with $166 million and didn't even make over $900 million worldwide. Will depend on subsequent weekends and overall worldwide reception.

BvS was crap. Vol 2 at least from the first impressions is a good film, maybe even great.

It still doesn't guarantee $1 billion worldwide. Batman v Superman started higher $160 million opening weekend. Fans said it would be even bigger than Star Wars Episode VII.
