Len Wiseman Drops Out of The Mummy Reboot

Director and "Underworld" franchise mastermind Len Wiseman had been on board to direct Universal's reboot of The Mummy as his next project following the Total Recall remake, but now he's had to drop out of the project due to scheduling conflicts.

The project is still moving forward without him as producers Sean Daniels, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci start searching for a new director immediately in hopes of getting the movie into theaters for the summer of 2014. The script for the attempted reinvention of the "Mummy" series, which has grossed $1.25 billion over three films, is written by Prometheus screenwriter Jon Spaihts.

Kurtzman and Orci were going for a darker and scarier take on the "Mummy" mythology said to draw inspiration from the science-based novels of Michael Crichton that would still appeal to a wide audience with the Mummy character being a monster but with more of a human personality.

Yaaaaaay.

Nah that's not very nice. Still, I wouldn't mind someone else doing it, lets just say that

I hope they find someone more generic and bland than Len Wiseman.

There's so much that can be done with mummy movies that just haven't been done yet. I would love to see The Jewel of the Seven Stars handled the right way.

''scheduling conflicts''

what am i 5 or what? if the problem is scheduling conflicts than tell me which movei or tv series. if you dont have the info than its money and creative differences.

"Scheduling conflicts?" Yeah right. The studio probably realized that they hired the director of the Total Recall remake or they told him he couldn't cast his wife.

some modern directors also like to be producers to get more money. so when the movie bombs or underperforms they can get as much as they can.

s.. the f.. up and direct the movie.

hollywood is becoming a smart business for directors and actors with no talent and a bad underperforming movie.

Hopefully this means Wiseman has something better lined up.

I want a remake closer to the 1932 Mummy. They could make it a cool darker Horror movie.

That wouldn't be bad.

I would like to see something like The Gates of Hell meets Final Destination... but not as cheesy as Final Destination.

I don't share the Wiseman-hate that alot of people on this board seem to have, but I really don't think he has the right sensibilities for the project as it's been described.

The last film was in 2008, they took 7 years to make that one, the last film, while bad, was begging for a sequel, all the secondary actors wanted to do more, Brendan Fraser originally quit the 4th film because of the sequel to journey to the center of the earth, however for some reason he didn't appear in that film, so what exactly is the problem? Why reboot something when the last one isn't that old, made money and the actors are open to do more.

Now the reboot also seems to be having weird production decisions.

Im all for this reboot. The 1999 film is a favorite of mine, but Returns is barely decent, Dragon Emporor is gutter sludge. Bring on a new take.

If they're going ahead with rebooting the franchise, I'm glad that Wiseman is out even though I don't really dislike him as a director. He's just way too bland, his movies need more seasoning.

Wiseman doing this movie was a bad idea for his career, especially after Total Recall.

I haven't seen The Gates Of Hell, but I have seen Final Destination.I'm thinking it could be something very atmospheric and Macabre. It could be amazing.

Because that worked out so well for The Wolfman. :o

I haven't seen the remake of the Wolfman. Is it that bad?

I agree. I thought Sommer's action adventure take was a great idea but they should return to the more horror aspect.

Now the disappointing thing about the original is how Karloff's actual Mummy is only at the beginning. I've lived a long time under the false assumption that he was the mummy for the entire film.

But I gotta say, the original Mummy doesn't work for me all that much. I much preferred the Hammer versions of it. So they could do better.

Only watched the Karloff version and the new ones, considering we don't really get films like that anymore i enjoyed the Indiana Jones esque feel in the new ones, and instead of the usual human main villain we get an imortal mummy, something i enjoy, whoever makes an Uncharted game copy should add this particular element.

But if they're really going to reboot then the best is to do their oun thing, and try a scarier and gothic aproach. Maybe they should name the mummy Kharis (like the one from the post-karloff mummy films) to diferentiate from the last film series
