Watched the original. I can see how the freak show setting would appeal to Del Toro. Personally I'd rather see him do more of his weird fantastical work but that's just personal preference.

Oh, man, I really need Dafoe, Shannon and Perlman sharing the screen.

    + Carol reunion!

Dafoe and Shannon just need to out crazy each other for two hours onscreen and I would pay full admissions

That's not a fair comparison. You see, Shannon and Dafoe only play crazy.

Guillermo del Toro Talks ‘Scary Stories,’ ‘Nightmare Alley,’ and Bringing His Fantasies to Life

But of course, for all his success as a producer, the place most fans are most eager to see del Toro is back in the director’s chair. For his first feature since winning two Oscars for “The Shape of Water,” del Toro has lined up “Nightmare Alley,” a dark, deeply cynical tale of a dissolute carnival mentalist. Though it was already made into a film starring Tyrone Power in 1947, del Toro looks to hew closer to the book, which doesn’t lack for contemporary relevance.

''Like most noir literature, in the book there was sort of a disillusionment with capitalism, and a disillusionment with quote-unquote civilization of the urban environment. It was very sexually charged, and really poignant about America, with a brilliant intuitive connection between carnival mentalism and the birth of psychology in America.''

Cate Blanchett starring in a Guillermo del Toro film is like an absolute dream come true for me, especially a del Toro take on film noir of all things. :mrk: This better happen, it sounds amazing.

Really looking forward to this. Del Toro is one of my favorite directors and I think this subject matter definitely suits him. If they get everyone mentioned above, that's an amazing cast. Even Del Toro's lesser efforts like Crimson Peak still have worthwhile elements like their superior set design. the noir setting will no doubt be fantastic.

Just watched the original film. Del Toro could definitely do some amazing things. Especially around “the geek” aspect. I’m sure he’ll keep the darker ending of the book than the “happier” ending of the movie.

Though, nothing against Bradley Cooper, but DiCaprio would have been perfect. Too bad it didn’t work out.

GDT has confirmed that this is going to have a R rating, he even joked that it's going to be hard R or 'Double R' which is great news. Reading more about the source novel (which now seems to be mostly out of print and therefore expensive) it sounds pretty dark and twisted, much more so than the 1947 film adaptation which toned down the darker parts and also minimised somewhat the role of the master manipulator female psychologist which is the role that Blanchett will (hopefully) be playing in this version.

    Bring. It. On.

Just get Jake Busey, he's making quite the career for himself playing a spoof of his dad's absurdity.

And she's confirmed it herself in a new interview, she's officially in. :jd:

Are you looking forward to working with Guillermo del Toro in “Nightmare Alley”? No (laughs). Of course, I’ve been wanting to work with that man since I came out of the womb. Yes, I’m super excited.

I guess that means that the other actors that were rumoured recently like Toni Colette, Willem Defoe, Ron Perlman, e.t.c are accurate too.

As well as Blanchett, Rooney Mara is now also confirmed. Carol reunion! :applaud

Some info about the plot of the novel that the movie is being adapted from:

Cooper is playing Stan Carlisle, Blanchett is playing Lilith Ritter, Mara is playing Molly and it's rumoured that Toni Colette is playing (Madame) Zeena, Willem Dafoe is playing Zeena's husband and Ron Perlman is playing Ezra Grindle.
