Plan Ahead When Using Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator’s Jack-O’ And Raven. June 10, 2016 . 1:30pm

Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator’s Jack-O’ and Raven are great characters that take quite a bit of practice to master, even though one’s relatively easy to use and the other risky.

Arc System Worksis good at making fighting games with characters whose play styles require you to think outside of the box. It isn’t as simple as everyone falling into certain categories, where if you’re good at using Grapplers in general, you’ll be an instant Potemkin master or zoning fans should immediately rush to Bedman. Things are more complicated than that, and both Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator’s Jack-O’ and Raven highlight that. Both of these new characters are the sort that require people to have an idea in their mind of how they’d like a fight to go before it even begins, due to Jack-O’s minion management and a need to make sure Raven takes enough damage to power himself up, but not put you in danger.

While Jack-O’ is complex, she’s the kind of character you could pick up and learn immediately after grabbing Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator. Many of her special attacks are incredibly easy to pull off. Both her Dust Attack and Remove the Chain of Chiron only require you to push the Dust button, and each consumes the Tension gauge to boost the attack. Her Hunger of Dopoulos special, which is great for ending a combo, is executed by holding back on the d-pad while pressing the Dust button. The Elysion Driver command grab is executed by pressing forward and dust at once. Want some Zest? Down and Dust. She’s not terribly complicated, which bodes well for beginners.

Even Jack-O’s Overdrives keep things simple. Calvados being a quick 214+slash away. Forever Elysion Driver’s a full circle with a punch. They’re easy to time and put together, which will benefit anyone coming into the game and excited about using someone new. I was hesitant to go with her first, because she’s new and seems complicated, but I feel like she’s one of the most welcoming fighters.

It’s like this is done to help ease you into the more complicated strategic measures. Jack-O’ can set up groups of minions and both direct and buff them. It’s basically like playing a real-time strategy game while having her fight an opponent. Good multitasking skills are key to maintaining her little buddies, while also taking time to jump in and unleash her own attacks. She can have three Ghost Houses set at once, and they’re easily placed by pressing down twice, then punch, kick, or slash for Knight, Lancer, or Magician ghosts. Two ghosts can of each type can be out at a time, with Knights and Magicians flying out and Lancers walking along. Once you have at least two Ghost Houses set, it’s smart to bring up Organ Deployment by pressing down twice and heavy slash to issue commands. When Jack-O’ is in this state, pressing punch retrieves all ghosts, kick triggers Clock Up to increase their attack and movement speeds, slash causes an Explosion that resets their levels and makes them all explode, and Aegis Field protects Jack-O’ and all ghosts within the spherical shield for five seconds. It sounds easy, right? It basically is.

Jack-O’ only gets more difficult once you factor in the other player. Having two to three Ghost Houses out at a time, with Ghosts constantly getting stronger and probably buffed from regular castings of Clock Up, is dangerous. Especially if the player using Jack-O’ sees someone trying to make an opening to get in, puts up an Aegis Shield to protect her, makes the minions go off in an Explosion, then uses Retrieve All Ghosts to pull them safely home again. She’s not the most difficult character to learn, but figuring out a way to safely set up your little buddies and bear down on enemies can take some time. I recommend lots of practice in the dojo, because you’ll need to work out specific strategies and plans ahead of time for optimum efficiency.

On the other hand, Raven is a character where planning is key, because you’re going to be putting him in danger to make him more efficient. Excitement is the name of the game with him, and I’m not ashamed to say I’m still nowhere close to mastering him. In fact, he’s probably the Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator character I have the most trouble using. Part of it is because putting him out there to take damage is what makes him more effective, but I haven’t personally worked out a way to do it without letting my opponents take too much advantage.

Raven is a high risk character. It’s possible to power him up for the rest of a round by going 214+kick to trigger Give It to Me Here. By holding this and taking damage, his excitement will be raise. He’ll be vulnerable, but increase power as a result. Seeing as two of his special moves, Grausam Impuls and Wachen Zweig, and both his Getreuer and Verzweifelt Overdrives increase in power if his excitement is high, with the special requiring that gauge to be three or higher.

As a positive, once you do have his excitement raised, some of his other specials are good at helping him stay alive. The moves above are powered up as a result of taking that chance, and his Schmerz Berg and Grebechlich Licht projectiles temporarily slow down opponents when they hit. His air dash is a swoop that deals damage without pressing any buttons, which is handy since it has an unexpected arch to it. I find the projectiles are a helpful lead-in to the Overdrives, especially since I had trouble getting the range right for Getreuer at the start. Due to his odd reach, it felt like sometimes I’d be getting too close to properly land a hit.

Raven’s nature helps explain why he’s normally locked away. While he’s currently free via an unlock download in the PlayStation Store until June 21, 2016, he normally costs 200,000W$. He’s really a difficult character to work out and, even after a week and a half, I can’t get him right. I had to earn the money to get him, and I feel like that extra experience helped. Spend a lot of time in the Dojo with him too, because you need to anticipate attacks and have various strategies in place to make sure he’s properly powered up every round.

Both Jack-O’ and Raven are great additions to Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator. They’re unique fighters with interesting personalities and movesets. I especially like how Jack-O’ is one that anyone could come in and enjoy using, thanks to her simplified inputs and reliance on allies in the field, while Raven’s more of a reward for putting in the effort by giving you a chance to spend even more time learning to use a difficult dude. As long as people are willing to practice with both and plan ahead, they’ll find them both to be great characters to use for fun or as mains.

Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator is immediately available for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

First look at Guilty Gear Xrd: Rev 2’s Baiken and Answer
Published 4 mins ago. 0 comments.

A look at the update's two new characters.

Famitsu has gone up with its first online preview of Guilty Gear Xrd: Rev 2, the upcoming update to Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator announced at the Arc System Works Fighting Game Awards this weekend.

The preview features a first look at new playable characters Baiken, who made her debut as a hidden character in the original Guilty Gear for PlayStation, and Answer, a brand new character.

Get the information below.
Baiken (voiced by Mayumi Asano)

The Lone Samurai

A strong-minded swordswoman of Japanese descent. A hidden weapon exists where her right arm should be.

She swears revenge on “That Man,” who she regards as the culprit behind the loss of her family and friends during the Crusades.

Baiken’s battle style concept of “Offensive and Defensive Unity” from previous titles returns. In Guilty Gear Xrd: Rev 2, she has a new technique called “Azami” where she takes a stance to stop the blow of the opponent’s attack, and can make use of various atacks derived from this technique for a renewed battle style.

Familiar techniques like “Tatami Gaeshi” will also return.
—“Azami”

Baiken takes a stance to stop the blow the opponent’s attack and issue a counterattack. The timing is important, but you can also use it during a guard. There is no aerial version of this technique.

—“Tatami Gaeshi”

A projectile attack that shoots up a vigorous tatami mat from the ground. It can also be activated from the air, and is useful when fighting mid-distance.

Answer (voiced by Tomokazu Seki)

The Business Ninja

Chipp Zanuff’s aide. He has abnormally developed memory power and is absolutely unable to forget an event once he has been experienced it. For that reason, those that know him call him the “Human Database.”

Answer, who is self-taught in ninjutsu, specializes in high-speed attacks that involve the strategic placement of business cards that stand atop the ground and scrolls. He has an abundance of dedicated, derivative attacks such as clone attacks and warps, and a charge attack after holding on to a scroll.

—“Intellininpou: Ringi no Sho”

A special move that sets a scroll in the air. After holding onto the scroll, you can follow up with other special moves.

—“Intellininpou: Musha Sabi”

If you move after setting a Ringi no Sho, it will become a charge attack. You can also move from a Ringi no Sho to a Ringi no Sho.

Now that we know eight of the nine titles to be at EVO 2017, event founder Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar, shared his thoughts on some of the games that made it in and some that didn’t in a recent interview with Shoryuken.

Here are some highlights from interview between Zavian “mushin_Z” Sildra of SRK and Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar.

On Street Fighter V topping its entrants record:
mushin_Z: Street Fighter V topped a massive 5100 entrants in 2016. Are you confident SFV can break that record in 2017?
Mr. Wizard: Records are meant to be broken, so anything is possible! We have a lot of space this year, so accommodating tournaments that break records should be doable.

On having both Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U in the lineup:
mushin_Z: Smash fans are likely thrilled, but not everyone is, surely–what justifies the inclusion of both Smash 4 and Melee once again?
Mr. Wizard: Having the 2nd and 3rd most entrants last year, with a very diverse cross-section of Smash players, says a lot. These are two dedicated communities and we see the value in bringing them both back. Smash is in fact a fighting game, and they deserve to be represented at Evo.

On having both Arc System Works’ main fighters, Guilty Gear and BlazBlue in the lineup:
mushin_Z: Air-dashers might be surprised that both Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 and BlazBlue: Central Fiction made it to the main stage this time, more likely expecting one to edge out the other. What made you decide to let them share the spotlight? Did the upcoming release of GG Xrd ReV 2 make a big difference?
Mr. Wizard: We were all set to let BlazBlue have the spotlight this year, but then that surprise curveball of ReV 2 getting announced a few days ago changes things up. We wanted to make sure that we could include both games this year, as we recognize that they have different communities for those games. Evo 2014’s BlazBlue Finals were epic, so we’re looking forward to seeing what players can do this year!

On Pokkén Tournament and other titles that didn’t make the lineup, but will get a chance via votes:
mushin_Z: Pokkén Tournament debuted last year, and is now out of the lineup–was it a hard game to cut? How strongly was it considered? And were Killer Instinct or Mortal Kombat X even in the running this year?
Mr. Wizard: Every fighting game is in the running and is considered every year. One of the key elements that we look at is if people are still playing it, and how often. Evo can only do so many tournaments every year, so that’s why we included all those titles in the vote so that we can make sure everyone has a shot at the final game.
You can read the full interview over at Shoryuken.

EVO 2017 is scheduled to take place from July 14th through July 16th at the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Those of you looking to attend can get more info on the official website. You can also head over here to donate and help a game get into the main lineup.

Guilty Gear Xrd: Rev 2 ‘Baiken’ character trailer
Published 6 hours ago. 11 comments.
The last Samurai returns to battle.

GGXrd-Rev-2-Trailer_05-22-17.jpg

PQube has released a short new trailer for Guilty Gear Xrd: Rev 2 spotlighting Baiken, one of the game’s new playable characters alongside Answer.

Here’s an overview of the character, via PQube:
One of the few people of Japanese descent left in the world of Guilty Gear after Japan was almost entirely destroyed in the crusades, Baiken is brash, impulsive, anti-social and motivated by a burning desire for revenge against Gears. She wanders the world looking for signs of That Man, the person she believes responsible for the death of her family and the crippling injuries she sustained as a child.

Despite only having one arm, Baiken has incredible skill with her katana and has developed a unique fighting style using a variety of weapons up her sleeve. Her ‘demon tools’ include a mace, cannon, bladed fan, hook, claw and a spear.

Baiken has a new trick, with her new projectile, the Suzuran Yashagatana, that shoots a rocket along the ground. She can utilize a Yellow Roman Cancel to use the projectile to cover her approach.

In Guilty Gear Xrd: Rev 2, Baiken is an offensively minded character with limited defensive tools. Her main defensive strategy is her Azami stance, which allows her to counter attacks, both on the ground and in the air.

Her mobility is slower, so she spends most her time controlling space with her sword, mace and infamous tatami mat, while trying to corner her opponents and looking for a knockdown opportunity.

Baiken shines when she knocks the opponent down, with several options for putting on the pressure and making her opponents crack.

Guilty Gear Xrd: Rev 2 will launch for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 on May 25 in Japan, and May 26 in North America and Europe, and for PC via Steam on June 1. The game will be available as a standalone physical and digital release on PlayStation 4, and as a $19.99 digital upgrade for Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator across all three platforms. A PlayStation 4 demo is currently available for PlayStation Plus members.

Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2’s Answer And Baiken Share Similar Motivations. June 2, 2017 . 12:00pm

Answer and Baiken’s Arcade modes play well off of each other, given the reasons for each character’s journey in Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2.

11 comments Read >

Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 is a notable update for many reasons. Chief among them is the inclusion of two new characters. Answer and Baiken both show up for this installment, with the former being playable for the first time ever and latter returning after being absent in Guilty Gear Xrd: Sign and Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator. Both are welcome additions, but what’s really nice about the game is how well the two play off of each other.

In case you missed Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator, Baiken and Answer do have a bit of a history together. In that entry, Baiken comes to the Colony to help Kum Haehyun. The Japanese are falling ill, but Information Flares were keeping Haehyun from saving everyone. Baiken brought to her a Ki infused tree, which gave her tuning power the strength to save everyone. When the Colony is attacked, it is Answer and Baiken who helps Haehyun.

Naturally, this means Answer and Baiken’s Arcade modes overlap in Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2. Each one is draw to the Colony as they travel across the countryside. In the case of Baiken, she’s there because of a tip. When checking in with someone who provides her with intel, she learns of a threat to the Colony. In a classic Baiken move, she makes sure her source knows that keeping secrets is a bad. The speech is rather wonderful, so here it is in its entirety.
“Listen very carefully. If I don’t get this information, I’ll cut you. If you play dumb, I’ll slash you. If you try and feed me some **** intel, I’ll slice you. If this silence goes on for three more seconds, I’ll divide you. Are we clear?”
She gets there and realizes something is off. She notices how many people are surprisingly there and finds that Answer and the administration are hanging around. After a quick fight, he presents her with information that shows unsavory folks are lurking about after the last incident. It ends with Baiken realizing the Colony will become a battlefield. While she doesn’t have many story segments, her Arcade mode is about her searching for and discovering new information.

Answer is the same. He realizes The Universal Will had something to do with the last incident and leaves the Eastern Kingdom of Chipp to do some investigating. This is all happening while he’s on the clock, though, which makes his Arcade mode even more delightful. He is truly the business ninja, with a three-piece suit and business cards as weapons. In his introductions and finishes, he’s in the middle of calls with various governments and important people in the hopes of establishing the new nation. It’s all rather hilarious, as we see this incredibly serious person scrambling to do everything at once, while also talking about the importance of having leisure time.

Even though Answer is someone who knows everything, his trip is about confirming things Chipp and him already know. Once he has confirmed his suspicions, he notes the knowledge he found seemed a little too convenient, as though it was planted. He then stops by the Colony, a place that happened to be on the way, and gets sidetracked by unexpected Ki. He then makes a diplomatic stop, which leads to an alternate view on his meeting with Baiken.

This route is also about giving new information to the player. This comes via a cameo in Baiken’s arcade mode that hints at things to come. There’s going to be a very brief spoiler here, one that won’t surprise people after the events of Guilty Gear X and Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus. Just in case you want to avoid the spoiler, here’s your opportunity to skip the next paragraph.

Okay, so at one point in Baiken’s Arcade story, she’s making a phone call in search of information on That Man. The person on the other end isn’t exactly helpful, but does direct her to visit the Colony and aid the people there in the face of an impending disaster. Who is that man on the phone? Well, we don’t see his face, but we do hear his voice, get a glimpse of his outfit, and… see him with a rather familiar fan. It’s Anji Mito. Baiken is relying on him for information again and he withholds it from her. It feels like a rather obvious hint that he’ll be returning to the series.

The Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 spoiler is over. Welcome back!

When you think about it, every Guilty Gear update is not only about making the games better. They are also about rounding out and expanding on a stories we already know. Additional players are brought in to give us new details and perspectives. The introduction of Answer and Baiken is handled well. The two’s storylines compliment each other, as each one is searching for information. Each one does find out certain truths by the end of their story, as well as realizes the Colony is going to depend their attention.

Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 Makes Some Characters Feel More Important . June 5, 2017 . 12:00pm

Seeing Dizzy, Jam, Kum, and Raven get more attention in Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 is a delight and makes them feel as though they matter more.

9 comments Read >

Whenever a Guilty Gear update arrives, the experience is usually a richer one. We get rebalanced characters, more characters, and other features that make it worth going through the game again. Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 is no exception. What is really nice here is how some new and returning characters get their due in their Episodes. While they were around for Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator, here it feels like they have more time to themselves, making them feel as though they matter more.

Some of these are incredibly important. Kum Haehyun is one of them. This is a major player in the Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 storyline, yet she didn’t have an enlightening Episode experience. Now, she does. We see the master tuner heading to the Colony to investigate an incident that we already knew she helped resolve. We see her heal people and interact with characters like Johnny and Faust to set things right. It gives us a better idea of her dedication. It sets up future interactions in the Colony.

Raven’s Arcade storyline is equally important, though for different reasons. With him, we learn more about I-No and Jack-O’. We see the preparations he and his allies need to take. It also helps us appreciate how capable he is. We see the lengths he goes to to find I-No. We watch him reach a resolution. It sets the stage in a different way, giving us insight into characters whose motivations have occasionally been more mysterious.

Not every newly added Episode is great. I’m rather disappointed in Dizzy’s. Rather than giving us a better idea of what is happening in Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 and helping us see the role she plays in the plot, it is more of a retrospective. She’s always with Ky, thinking back on her past, before pummeling him in the future. It does make sense, of course not everyone will be active and involved in each entry’s events, but it feels more subdued compared to others’ storylines.

Of all the expanded tales, Jam’s Episode is my favorite. It basically acts as a callback to her original motivations. She doesn’t have money or a restaurant. Instead, she is left going through Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 in search of more funding by hunting bounties. She ends up working with Jack-O’. We not only get to see her devotion, but also see her expertise as a Ki master. We see her help someone else, and in so doing relieve herself of frustration. Even though it may not be as exciting or impactful as someone more involved in the main plot, we can see how Jam’s influence on Jack-O’ is important.

There are many ways in which Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 feels like a fuller, richer version of Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator. But for me, having an expanded story mode and arcade lines devoted to Dizzy, Jam, Kum, and Raven are what really drives that point home. Instead of feeling like characters that were just thrown in for the sake of having them and expanding the roster, it really feels like they belong. Even ones that aren’t as robust, like Dizzy’s, are more than welcome and makes the game feel more complete.

Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 is available for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Guilty Gear Creator Says To Expect The Next Game To Be Less Complicated With Reduced Systems . February 16, 2018 . 4:00pm

Guilty Gear creator Daisuke Ishiwatari had some words to share about his series going forward, the possibility of Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 getting ported to Switch, the pro scene, and a bit on Dragon Ball FighterZ.
192 comments Read >

We recently heard from Arc System Works producer Toshimichi Mori about BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, and Guilty Gear creator Daisuke Ishiwatari had some words to share about his series going forward, in an interview with Destructoid.

First, Ishiwatari shared a comment about his thoughts on Arc System Works and the pro scene:
“Arc System Works has worked on multiple fighting games, not just Guilty Gear but others as well. Our thinking behind this strategy is that fighting games are a communication tool, so if there’s more out there there’s more communication. But EVO is a larger user base, so Arc has been focusing on tapping into everyone, so our titles are appreciated on a larger stage.”

He followed with some comments about Dragon Ball FighterZ:
“What we can say is that Dragon Ball FighterZ was developed based on the lessons learned through previous Guilty Gear and BlazBlue titles, but for Guilty Gear specifically it’s important for us to maintain the people we’ve already won over. At the same time we do want to expand the userbase so more users are coming in. Daily, we’re trying to figure out what our balance point is to satisfy our users that are already with us and new users.”

Ishiwatari on a possible Switch port of Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2:
“That’s a really good question. One of the goals for Guilty Gear is achieving high quality graphics. Specifically on that point the Nintendo Switch might not be a good match, but that’s not our final conclusion. We’re still working on that.”

When asked about the assessment of Guilty Gear being a sort of “niche series for a hardcore audience,” Ishiwatari responded with the following:
“After releasing Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 it’s clear what we need to improve on. The key is to win over more users because of the complex controls. But if we implement everything the game will no longer be Guilty Gear. It’s hard to balance out all the improvements. One thing that we have to do in the next installment is to reduce the number of systems [mechanics]; it’s too complicated for everyone. You can expect that in the next game.”

Lastly, when asked how long he intended to keep making games, Ishiwatari replied with the following gem: “Until I die.”

Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Guilty Gear 20th Anniversary Edition announced for Switch
Published 12 hours ago. 23 comments.
Includes Guilty Gear and Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R.

GG-Ann-Edition_01-18-19.jpg

Arc System Works and PQube have announced Guilty Gear 20th Anniversary Edition for Switch, which will include both the original Guilty Gear and Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R in one package. Additionally, both games will be released as separate digital versions and Guilty Gear will be released for PlayStation 4. It will launch this spring.

Here is an overview of each game, via Arc System Works and PQube:

Guilty Gear

In 1998, one game made huge waves within its genre: Guilty Gear for the original PlayStation. Spectacular special moves that brought the console to its limits, a hardrock soundtrack that still has to meet its match, innovative mechanics and unique characters that kicked off an incredibly complex and epic anime story will equally fascinate fighting game fans today, as it did 20 years ago!

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R

First released in 2008 in Japan, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R is the final installment and epitome of the Guilty Gear XX series that polished everything introduced in the 12 previous installments to reach optimal balance. Mechanics like the universal overhead attack “Dust” as well as “Roman Cancel”, which allows players to cancel all kinds of actions and therefore increases their options dramatically, set the bar for the series’ sequel: Guilty Gear Xrd.
