BLACKSBURG, Va. — A gunman has been reported near a Virginia Tech dining hall, officials said Thursday.

The university issued an alert on its website at 9:37 a.m. Thursday telling students and employees to stay inside and secure doors.

The alert said the gunman was reported near Dietrick Hall, a three-story dining facility. The dining hall is steps away from the dorm where the first shootings took place in 2007, when a student gunman killed 32 people and then himself.

The school said on its website that three juveniles attending a camp at the school reported seeing a man holding what may have been a handgun. They said it was covered by a cloth or covering of some sort, and that the man was walking in the direction of the volleyball courts.

Officials said they are looking for a white man with light brown hair who is 6 feet tall. Officials say the person is wearing a blue and white striped shirt, gray shorts and brown sandals. He was described as clean shaven, according to the university’s website.

Police from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg and Christiansburg are searching for the man, as well as Montgomery County sheriff’s deputies

Reported doesn't mean factual. For all we know they saw someone with something resembling a gun in their hands or it's a cruel prank. Or there really was someone with a gun but not with intent to go on a shooting spree... although why they'd have a gun in the open and around a campus I don't know. People do stupid things.

I swear to God, if this is a prank, the people involved deserve to go to jail.

This getting a little ridiculous. If this is a hoax or prank, the person doing it should be arrested.

I just called and talked to him. His summer classes ended and he is home. PHEW!

God dammit, Virginia Tech!

I know this draws headlines do to past events, and while it is a big deal, at other universities, SLU for example, this kind of thing is basically a monthy if not weekly occurrence.

All the more reason for gun control. Guns DO kill people.

*puts on flame shield*

I though ammunition killed people, not guns...

Turns out...the entire thing was this:

Three guys saw someone walking...and there was some sort of cloth or fabric in his hand. The guys assumed that the fabric was covering something, and it would have to be small because they saw no evidence of anything other then the fabric, so they assumed it was a hand gun.

That's it.

What's incredible is that I saw people saying "I hope they catch the guy and put him in jail for the rest of his life"...and whoever the suspect was...he was WALKING...with FABRIC...and people want him in jail for the rest of his life?????????

I wasn't far off in my guess it was something resembling a gun but still, cloth? And people see a gun? This is what a paranoid state does to people. Guns in everyone's hands, terrorists at every corner, people just waiting to cause mayhem and havoc.

Sensitivity to a situation or location is one thing, but this, this is just outright fear with no rationalization in sight.

At least here where I live, people are issued carry permits, and are allowed to carry guns around with them in public. I don't know if Virginia is the same way, but it is legal in certain areas to carry a gun on you.

There was a shooting on my campus last semester. It didn't make any news headlines.

Well, if the suspect is looking to kill someone in VA tech it's nothing new. There have been a few murders on and off campus of VA students in the last 4 years or so.

Why? What is going on there.
