An LG HD/Blueray combo player! I was at Best Buy last night with my friend, and they've got a KILLER deal going on right now. 36 months, no interest for purchases $999 & over.....GAHGAHGAH!! :wow:

So I went to talk to my fiance about it (since I'm becoming a responsible man :)), and she wasn't too responsive about the whole deal.

We went round & round talking about it, not fighting, but I haven't come to a conclusion. Her main point was, "You're paying $1,000 for a dvd player?!"

And my main point was, "???"

Help me out guys! This is the future of technology, and I always enjoy being at the forefront of purchasing. Is this a waste of my/our money? Should we wait? And won't it suck if I can't watch Transformers in HD!? :(

However looks like BluRay will be the will be the winning format. Still buy a 360, but just to play games. HDDVD will go the way of the 'Beta'.

if your gonna buy a 1000 dollar Blu Ray/HD DVD player i suggest don't, just buy a ps3, Blu Rays are better than HD DVD anyway imo, and plus with the other 300- 400 dollars left over you can buy games and movies, the BR movies are like 20 bucks and the games are 60.

ps3 is definitely worth it, i have it and i use it often.

Blue Ray is teh suck. Buy a 360.

Blue Ray < 360

I wanna laugh, but I can't. It's like none of you are listening to a word I said??

Did I once mention a 360? No. That one's for everyone. And it's free.

Also to all three of you, I don't play video games. I have no use for a 360, and I have no use for a PS3.

The point of the combo unit is to avoid trouble if one of them goes byebye, which won't be anytime soon. There seems to be room in the market right now for both, despite what I used to believe. And with some stuff only offered in one format or the other, it's a big gamble to go with one.

Plus, and this one's also for free kids, the PS3 is still losing Hundreds of Millions of dollars every quarter, which means the 360 (backed by HDDVD) is still pumping out systems and extensions. Nobody's folding up tent anytime soon. One player's just as reliable as the other.

Still way too overpriced at this point. If you've got the coin for it, have fun. I'm going to wait until the format wars have been settled a bit more and the technology prices come down for this sort of stuff. I'll let trailblazers like yourself help companies like LG recoup their R&D costs first. :)

Why spend a $1000 when you can wait a year to see which one wins and then you can spend the $1000 on a fully dedicated HD player... Just my two cents on the matter...

if you want a hi-def player i say right till before Christmas when they'll be lowering the prices. if you want to go with just one kind of player i'd suggest supporting blu-ray since it's better technology but a combo blu-ray/hd-dvd player sounds good for now since the "war" is still going on and not all the companies are releasing their stuff on both formats.

All great and valid points.

Thanks for giving me some level-headed advice, Jag. I wasn't sure, but did I notice a tiny jab at LG?

Movies, I want to counter your point by saying that I'm personally starting to believe that the "format war" has just been a tactic to drive up sales for BOTH markets. And as I mentioned before, with the PS3 basically bombing in sales, I don't see the 'war' being settled for 3 or 4 years at least.

I think people are starting to get comfortable with both formats.

So why not enjoy the best of both worlds? They're almost past the first-gen stages, and glitches are minute at best.

But maybe Fresh puts it best. Wait and see what happens around Christmas time, pricewise.

....However, will stores be offering 3 years 0% interest then?? :(

Maybe... But hollywood got cap this thing sooner or later if they want start making a profit and they probably realize this. Also a combo HD player sounds good on paper. But you have to think that somethings had to be sacrifice to make such a machine. And not only that buying it so early in the format war means that your going miss out on features that will come out of 2nd and 3rd generation, just like the DVD players now.

Why don't you play video games? Savage. :cmad:

No jab at LG. ALL tech companies overprice new technology in order to recoup their R&D costs faster. Early adopters always wind up paying more to have it "first".

I grew up on a GameBoy, SNES, and Nintendo 64. But in high school, I just couldn't dedicate that much time to gaming. And in college, I got involved in a lot of organizations and groups, spent a lot of time making new friends, and I just put gaming to bed.

Now I'll play the Wii every few weeks. But video games can be a real time consumer (no offense), and I've got too many other things going on in my life right now. :)

I'd wait until the war is over.
Is HD DVD or Blu-Ray winning right now?

True. I pay somewhat of a price with my HDTV since so many channels haven't converted. :down But in football season (which is HERE!), it's well worth the purchase.

What's your opinion on the upconvert dvd players? My friend bought one last night, but I'm not sure if it's a waist of money or not?

if you are becoming a responsible man, then you will wait until you have the money in hand to buy the player rather than putting yourself into debt. there is no such thing as a "killer deal" that ends with your being in debt. if it seems too good to be true, then it is too good to be true.

Hard to tell to be honest... I think blu-ray been winning in terms of actual movie sales but the Comptuer industry i.e. Microsoft is pushing HD...

I've still got a Gen 2 Sony DVD player from 99' or 00', and it has more functions and still works better than any of my friends' dvd players.

Prognosticator, if you want to buy it so much, do it

personally, I wouldn't do it, but then again I'm too anti establishment (and too poor :() to fall for commercial tricks

just wait, if you want to shell out 1k which you will be paying plus interests for the next what? three years? go ahead, just keep in mind that the way things are going nowadays, it won't be a year and a half before something else comes and renders both technologies obsolete and you'll be stuck paying for something that's really not that useful anymore, yes I am exaggerating, but you know what I mean, right?

I have an upconvert DVD player for my HDTV and it works well enough for my purposes. It produces a much better picture than a standard DVD player, so it was worth it. But I also got it for $149, not $1000. I'd rather have $800 to spend on other things, personally.

It's reported that Blue Ray outsells HDDVD 2:1, but the 360 (HD) is KILLING the PS3 (BR), and that was supposed to be the trigger that drove the market...

a friend of mine has also a Sony dvd player they got him in 2001

of course, the device still works great, the problem is that this came before multi region players were more common

it doesn't play pal, windows media, divx, no usb drive, etc

it still functional, but becoming more obsolete each and every day

but it still works fine

Exactly. That's why my friend bought the upconvert instead of an HDDVD player. And I was considering it as well. They're only $80-$100 now, and I have a lot of TV shows on DVD that I watch. So maybe that'd be more worth my $$$?
