Halo Vs. Halo 2

Halo in general sucks. I honestly don't know what it does that any other shooter doesn't.

It's not annoying in any way. Pretty much every other shooter has something that annoys.

Far as I know it was the first FPS where melee was the weapon you had equipped (IE pistol whipping/rifle butt) instead of a gimpy knife as your first weapon.

.......

Marry me.

:D

I dont know, halo was kind of a slow shooter IMO. Then again, I've grown up on UT and such at 300% speeds...

2 words: Perfect Dark. In PD on the N64, the secondary weapon on the Falcon pistols was a pistol whip.

Let's see now -

  • Halo invented the modern console FPS control scheme.

  • IHalo was the first game to implement the "smart-reticule" system that many console shooters like Rainbow Six 3 now use.

  • Halo was the first FPS to properly integrate the use of a number of different (both land and air) vehicles with simple, intuitive controls during gameplay.

  • Halo was the first FPS to limit you to only two weapons and standardized both grenades and melee as button-specific secondary attacks.

  • Halo has a deep, brilliant and amazingly well-written plot that few games, let alone shooters, can compete with.

  • Halo's excellent A.I is held in high esteem amongst both gamers and game developers alike.

  • Halo was the first well-known, successful FPS to give the player a regenerating shields system as a permanent, persistent gameplay mechanic.

  • Halo was the first FPS to have huge, detailed environments with practically no load times during gameplay whatsoever (if you're going to bring up those brief, less-than-a-second pauses that feel more like framerate hitches than loading times, don't bother).

  • Halo was one of the few shooters that had a very detailed, inspired and exceptional art direction.

And I have yet to delve in the multiplayer side of the game.

If you happen to come across a FPS that incorporates all of the above elements, be sure to let us know.

What's the smart-reticule?

We need a "Best Shooter" thread.

It's a system Bungie created for console players to compensate for the lack of precision when playing with a controller as compared to a mouse. It had something to do with the comparitively bigger size of the reticule in Halo where it grows instead of shrinking to indicate greater accuracy. Unlike many other FPS, anything within the sights of your reticule regardless of whether it is in the center or at the very edges, is a guaranteed hit no matter what. One of the developer interviews at Gamespot for Rainbow Six 3 has it covered where the programmer of the game speaks of it in greater detail.

The aiming in Halo is pretty good, I'll give it that.
But the rest of it is pretty generic and/or boring.
That is, of course, my opinion only.

That wasn't even the best part. Bungie's best manipulation of aiming was the system they had that slowed scrolling down as you passed over an enemy, making precision that much easier for a controller. It worked so brilliantly and people never notice it (maybe that's a testament to how well it worked), but they should at least know it's there, because I found it brilliant.

Next time you're aiming at an enemy that doesn't notice you, try scrolling your aim around them, you will notice it moves slower over the enemy.

Good observation. I won't be surprised to hear that most good modern console first-person shooters use Bungie's smart-reticule system, even if the developers don't admit it.

Halo is awesome, and what more fun way to disrespect your kill then hump its' dead body.

I'm starting to not care for it either, I hate those twelve and thirteen year olds in parties. I had this terrible Team Snipers match with these idiots who kept team killing each other and I ended up getting kicked. It wouldn't be that bad but while they were at it they kept talking in these voices. You know, when white suburban children pretend to be gangster and rap.

Well you see, MC, there are some people in this world who just have to die. And it's just you contributing to the flow of the universe if you actually do what must be done...

Yeah. I hate little kids in parties.
