I think it will do well but won't outgross Rogue One. Rogue One is still the 10th highest grossing movie of all time domestically.

I picked between 800 and 900M and i'm comfortable with that guess. It won't surpass Rogue One and i don't think it will make 1B either. It has been received "Ok" critically and the competition will likely hurt the gross as well... I think it will still do well domestically but internationally it might not correspond accordingly.

I just don't see that much interest and buzz around the movie.

Yeah, just look at the last few posts in this thread. Doesn't seem like the majority opinion around here at least.

    4 day 'Memorial Day' weekend multipliers of the recent past: POTC5 - 2.2; XM:A - 1.95; DOFP - 2.12; F6 - 2.04; MIB III - 2.58; Hangover II - 1.88; NATM 3 - 2.53; KotCS - 2.09; POTC3 - 2.02

Simply going off of this data and taking the avg. of the multipliers of these 9 titles (also going by the assumption that Solo opens to 170m over the 4 day weekend) I see the movie doing 366m. On the higher end I can see Solo doing (2.35x170) = 399.5m. :ninja: :D

800-900 million was my guess as well. That would make it a solidly profitable movie and more than justify it's existence.

I disagree slightly with your last sentence. I do think there is SOME buzz around Solo, just not episodic SW or Avengers type buzz.

$400m would be a very good number.

At this point, you can't see $350 million or more as anything other than a success considering all this movie had going against it. Not all these movies can make over half a billion domestically.

Rogue One was still riding the wave of The Force Awakens and had more of a cushion. Plus it had those connections to the original trilogy that probably got fans excited.

Haven't seen any accurate numbers out there for the budget. If Rogue One really cost about $200 million, you would think Solo likely costs a similar amount if not slightly more due to the extensive reshoots.

    But it'll fall half a million short of that mark. #NotAVeryGoodNumber :D :p :o

Vader was still shown only in the final trailer. Not sure how big a mark it made for the GA. R1 definitely rode the coattails of TFA to become a 500m+ movie.

Vader was also shown in Trailer 2, not only the final one. Quite a lot of subtle exposure to make him the selling point.

Ah, I must not have seen that one then. My bad. Thanks for the info.

Also yeah, Vader is a huge draw. I mean North American folks flocked to the theaters to watch the ROTS even after a very divisive and sort of disastrous AOTC (I still unabashedly love it tho) mostly because they wanted to see Anakin's descent to the dark side and eventual transformation to Vader. That had to be the main hook for the movie and it worked brilliantly in the end as far as BO receipts are concerned. The same effect probably worked in favor of R1 too.

Star wars movies did very well in christmas timeframe. All its movies grossed more than a billion. So why did disney change its release strategy ?

Solo is gonna gross even less than DP2 worldwide.

Is there any other SW movie coming out this December ?

If Deadpool 2 beats this worldwide...lol. I remember when Star Wars used to be the biggest movie franchise. Marvel had taken over

Disney couldn’t release Solo in December because they have Mary Poppins Returns coming out in Christmas.

And the ending with Vader made a lot of folks see the movie over and over. Also word of mouth about the ending helps sales also.

They are trying to see how it does in May, which makes one wonder if they will try and start releasing two films a year.

The downward tracking for this film is eerily similar to JL right now.

I guess Mary Poppins is very much suited to Xmas and could become a classic like the original. Otherwise serms strange to change a winning strategy and what was becoming a tradition.

How well, or not so well, this movie does has a lot of factors. The was a general mehness to the concept in the first place. There is moving it to a packed summer, this close to the last Star Wars film and not really promoting it because of that until later. International numbers in Asian are just getting worse. But in terms of domestic pull, this might be the most telling when it comes to the reaction to TLJ. Coming off TFA, Rogue One was hyped to hell. TLJ coming off TFA and Rogue One, was hyped to hell. This movie almost feels like a whisper post-TLJ outside of those really pissed about TLJ.
