I know some may not like it,but I did. I found it a creepy and disturbing sequel. Julianne Moore did a good job filling in for Jodie Foster(to be honest,I liked Moore in the role alot more,as weird as that may sound to some). Anthony Hopkins is one of my all time favorite actors and as usual,he was brilliant. Lecter wasn't as scary as he was in "Silence," but that was because he was caged in that film(as was his evil intentions)and it made you think of what this monster would do if ever released, and that's what made him scary. But,still...he had that menace and fear about him. You never knew what he was gonna do or how he would react. He was still, unpredictable. Of course, who could forget Gary Oldman as Mason Verger. Wonderful acting and a very disturbing look. He managed to become the greater villain when all was said and done.
I didn't like the ending that much. It seemed a little too far fetched(esp. the "dinner" scene),but overall I thought it was a worthy follow up. Certainly alot better that the remake of Red Dragon and Hannibal rising(both films I found to be un-nessecery).

I'm usually in the minority when I saw that I really enjoyed Hannibal. I mean you pretty much nailed it on the head: While Silence was more psychological, Hannibal was more visceral, but there was something about the way it was written, the way the characters were handled, and the way Hopkins played Lecter that just really gelled for me.

Plus, the score by Hans Zimmer (perhaps his best score to date) and the location cinematography makes me want to retire one day in Florence. The film is beautifully shot. And I really liked the ending. In chronological order, this is pretty much the end for Hannibal Lecter in his film iteration, and I thought this was the perfect ending for him. I would have been disappointed if he had died or been caught (again), so him a free man, giving that boy a lovely treat, seemed very in-character for the good (or bad) doctor, and I can just imagine him continuing to do what he does best, and leaving the door open like that for the imagination is exactly how a story should end.

I actually think Hannibal is a very good film and it is underrated. It my not be as good as The Silence Of The Lambs but it still a worthy sequel. Hopkins was great again as Hannibal Lecter and I also thought Gary Oldman was very good as Mason Verger.

8/10

"On a similar note I must confess to you, I'm giving very serious thought... to eating your wife"

"As your mother tells you, and my mother certainly told me, it is important, she always used to say, always to try new things"

Hannibals ok. I just dont like how so much had changed from Silence of the Lambs

Subtle sexual tension became not so subtle actions by Hannibal

Clarice went from timid trainee to the Guiness World Record holder for most shots taken by a female FBI agent in the field.

Theres character development and then theres portraying characters at the entire other end of the spectrum. The first much better than the last.

Anthony Hopkins is perfect in this role and they did a good job with the Hannibal character. It's a shame that Foster didn't come back. This is absolutely one of the best horror sequels .

Although Lecter was older in the film I find it kind of weird that Hopkins won the Oscar for his role as Hannibal Lecter in "Silence," but didn't even get nominated for "Hannibal." Despite playing the same character!

Didn't like this film that much. And yeah, Clarice was changed from being timid to being a hard broiled cop who shoots first and ask questions later. I didn't like her characterization one bit. And even if Foster still played that role, it still wouldn't of worked out.

Red Dragon is alot better.

Yeah, Gary Oldman as Mason Verger.. that was good

agreed he was very good
help me out with something--only saw it in theaters (everytime I caught on tv, it was already started)--Gary Oldman's name's never actually in the beginning credits, right..? Yet, I remember seeing a picture of him (as Mason Verger pre-incident) in some files that we see on a desk, or something like that.. Hmm, was it like that or is my mind playing tricks on me..? :woot:

Gary Oldman was great though. As always. But the first time I didn't know it was him. Plus, that face was just so hard to look at.

At first he demanded top billing with Hopkins and Moore. They denied it so he said "screw it, i want no billing"

Great make-up work. I could stand it because I know it wasn't real (never show me a picture of that poor bastard James Vance thought--I can't stand the real deal)

You know the Mason Verger picture in his wikipedia page was removed because of it?

I love this movie. I remember counting down the hours til I owned it on dvd. I've never read the series, so I can't compare it to the books.

Ridley Scott really made this gruesome than Silence, but that's what I liked about this movie. Julianne Moore wasn't annoying as I was thinking she was going to be when I first heard of the movie. She was acutally very convincing as Agent Starling.

I remember when I first saw the movie in theaters, I didn't know who was playing Mason Verger. It even slipped my mind in his flashback sequence. But Oldman did a great job and the make-up was extremely convincing.

The overall story of the hunt for Lecter, and the revenge of Mason Verger, made the movie appealing and made it flow well. I loved the end where he's talking to Clarice about "if you ever loved me would you tell me to stop" then the CHOP...at first, it had me shocked, I didn't think he would really do it.

Overall, 8/10 for me. I would recommend it to anyone, even if you haven't seen Silence of the Lambs, you won't be that lost, the director does a good job of keeping you up to speed.

Manhunter kicks the crap out of Hannibal and Silence of the Lambs. Many forget that SOTL is a sequel and a poor one at that. And what's with all the love for Jodie Foster?
