Harry Potter future franchise

The Fantastic Beasts films (especially the second one) suffer from a serious lack of a chosen direction. They bounce around a gazillion of different characters each with their own plots, many of which go nowhere, and it just ended up being a jumbled mess. It was kind of like if you took Game of Thrones and all the characters it had and tried to squish it down into a 2 1/2 hour movie.

If they wanted to make movies about Dumbledore and Grindelwald, then make movies about them. Don't waste time with a bunch of other characters while Dumbledore appears for all of five minutes between two films.

If you want a franchise about Newt searching for strange creatures around the globe, then do that. Don't shoehorn the Grindelwald stuff into it.

They simply don't know what story they actually want to tell and it shows. It reeeaaaaallllyyyy shows.
I agree and disagree with this and I said it back when FB:COG came out. I really do think JK Rowling knows what she wants to do, but the problem is she is a novelist trying to write a screenplay.

JK Rowling is very adept at world building and you really see this in her novels, but even those original HP movies didn't try and cram in every character and plot detail from those books. That's what COG felt like, someone trying to cram in every idea in a novel into a movie, as you said. Take Goblet of Fire, for instance. That film has no Ludo Bagman, no Winky or Dobby, no house elves at all, barely any Rita Skeeter, Barty Crouch Sr. is in there sort of, and Viktor Krum and Fleur Delacour are barely even characters in the film. Why? Because the screenwriter wisely cut them out, even though they all feature heavily in the book, they are ancillary to the main plot of the film. JK needs to come up with the story, write a 35000 word treatment or whatever if she needs to, but then she needs to work with a real screenwriter to actually write the script.
