You'd think he would.
Yes, I think he had tried it, but failed. Metallo had melt the welding seam in seconds. And his revenge was painful for the man of steel. Also Metallo can shot Supes with a Kryptonite gun. There is no need for his chest, to tame and defaeted superman.
He can't, I don't think. I think it comes down to METALLO not giving Superman the chance to get close enough for heat vision.
He can freeze him with his SuperBreath
The closest I ever seen was the second episode of the ninth season of Smallville where Clark used his heat vision on a manhole, used his super speed and slammed it on Metallo on his chest, then John ripped it off, basically shutting him down. Superman Secret Origin#6 also did something similar where in #6 Superman melts a manhole to cover the kryptonite and flies Metallo into space until the lack of oxygen knocks him out.
I know about the Smallville tactic and the gun on Public Enemies. But can anyone give me a specific instance of a welding attempt?
That doesn't make any sense. I've seen him project heat beams for yards-more than enough to be able to reach Metallo without being within debilitating range of the kryptonite.
