I just saw a tweet asking something similar to this, and I've never thought about it, but it's true.

Actually, this topic is somewhat related to something I noticed myself as well.

It seems a lot of the time when the word "immature" is thrown around from one person to another in a society (at least in recent years), that conclusion reached by the person making the claim is almost entirely based on the other person's sense of humor. As in terms of what they find humorous, what they watch/listen, etc.

And a lot of the time when that's the case (at least from the cases I've experienced in real life), the "immature" person is often either in the exact same boat as the supposed "mature" individual or is much better off in terms of income/career/stress level/will and perseverance/whatever. Yet the "mature" individual still insists the "immature" individual is somewhat less mentally advanced than him or her. I've noticed this sort of accusation between older spouses the most, and again, often based on their respective spouse's sense of humor and/or their overall attitude during moments of "fun". Unsurprisingly, I also find that the person spouting the 'immature' label in the first place often doesn't have a sense of humor him or herself, and happens to have a stick up their *** accompanied by high levels of stress as well.

Essentially, "you're so immature" has almost become just a different way of saying "I don't like your sense of humor".
