Apologies if there's already a thread somewhere, but this needs its own subforum.

This is the main show I'm looking forward to once GoT is over. Watchmen would make for an incredible series, loosely follow the plot of the novel, but also diverge like they're doing with GoT. Have it be like a alternate historical period piece, from the 40's to the 80's, flashbacks to the Minutemen, Dr. Manhatten and Comedian in Vietnam, Rorschach and Nite Owl's time as partners, etc. etc.

Has real potential to be a fascinating, Dark, adult series with political, psychological, philosophical, and spiritual themes.

Not sure how I feel about Lindelof being the showrunner. I love Lost, but they are two different things, I'm hoping he can bring a real authentic maturity to this series. I'm probably more excited for this show than I am the DCEU films

Post-Leftovers Lindelof is a new man. As long as he has the same wacky and inventive writing staff around him that he had for The Leftovers, I think we can expect some awesome stories set in the alternate history world of Watchmen.

I really want Mimi Leder to direct the show.

That's good to hear. I still haven't gotten around to watching Leftovers, it's on my watchlist. I know he's got a creative mind for it. And he said he was a huge fan of both the graphic novel and Snyder's film

The first season is a bit of a slog, but the show really finds its footing in terms of characterization, theme and tone once it deviates from the source material in S2/3 and starts writing more original stories. It's why I think Lindelof and co. is an excellent choice to adapt Watchmen.

Oh cool. Yeah I actually watched the first 3 or 4 episodes (up to the one where the Preacher bets all his money on red) when the first season came out, but never followed up. I actually thought it got cancelled. Good to hear it's worth watching. I loved Lost when it was airing. So much fun to watch as it aired and speculate in between episodes. That was the first show I followed on the Internet like that.

With a little more mature, focused writing and planning ahead, I could see that kinda outside the box thinking really working with source material like Watchmen. The alternate history, flashbacks and multiple timelines, and all the really out there, psychedelic possibilities a character like Manhatten offers.

Really looking forward to this series. I wonder how far they are planning on deviating from the source. I could see the first season focusing on the murder of Comedian, but switching up the murderer so that it's not Ozymandias. Or changing his plan to something else. Many possibilities.

lol I bet Alan Moore won't be too happy about it

I had no ideas this was even in the works. Count me in. :D

Yeah. The second and third seasons actually benefit from the uneven and somewhat morose first season. It makes the payoffs that much better. So keep trudging through it.

The best eps in S1 of The Leftovers are the ones that are vignettes and focuses on one character, and the show finds its stride when in S2 when it does more of the same. So yeah, I really think Lindelof is a prime candidate to adapt Watchmen and create more stories like that. I could see it be less overarching and more of each episode focusing on a member of the Watchmen. One episode for the Comedian, Rorschach, Nite Owl, Dr.Manhattan, Silk Spectre, previous members of the Watchmen etc.

The Leftovers really took the time to deconstruct the post-Apocalyptic world of The Departure, and I think an HBO show could really build on Moore's world and stories.

Leftovers was a great show, it really got in depth about who the characters were and what they were feeling.

Cool. I'm actually on the 3rd episode of Season 2 of Leftovers, it has definitely pulled me in, especially with the change in location. There are some parallels with the writing in Lost.

I agree, I think his writing style will be a perfect fit for Watchmen. I'm thinking thrbfirst season will revolve around a murder mystery, probably The Comedian, and we'll get different character's perspectives in each episode as well as flashbacks that connect to the main story. The fact that it's HBO has me even more excited

Definitely needs its own sub-forum.

My question is will they use Before Watchmen material or go in a completely different direction?

I"m glad you like Leftovers, seems like not enough people were watching it. :(

I'm betting they'll look at it, might pick up some material from it, but I imagine they're gonna just go their own way with the source material.

I'm betting the first season will follow the book, starting with the murder of Comedian, but they will diverge towards the end of that story, like maybe Ozymandias has a completely different plan, or turns out to be less of a villain than it may appear at first.

I'm wondering if it will be set in the 80's, or they will bring it to a twisted version of modern day. I'm hoping they keep it in the 80's because I think that history would be so much better, with the Vietnam war and the heroes going back to the 40's, 50's, and 60's. The 80's is kinda the beginning of the idea that the American Dream has become so warped

So production on Damon Lindlehof's Watchmen is underway. Per his Instagram-

If anyone but Lindlehof was the show runner on this I'd be up for it but, the guy is awful, at everything.

I loved the Leftovers so I'm in. :)

I still have trouble picturing this as a regular series. Instead of a limited run.

It just seems funny to have to wait potentiality 6-7 years to get to the squid ending.

Couple new articles. Interesting. This could be my most anticipated (or at least the most intriguing) upcoming series as well as comic adaptation. The fact that it's HBO has me the most excited. I could see it being similar to GoT and Westworld, which I'm really digging, not to mention the numerous other fantastic series. You can always count on them to put their best foot forward in terms of budget and story. They definitely have more hits than misses. And I think there's so much to mine from the source material that would fit well into an HBO series, the philosophical, spiritual, political, psychological, themes and dark realism, allegory, etc. I'm especially looking forward to some flashbacks to the old days, Minutemen, and all the historical events. The noir, hardboiled detective aspect with Rorschach and the spirtual/existential questions bought up by Dr. Manhatten. Could be like True Detective, in that sense. So much potential to be a compelling series

One I thought that was a pretentious ass letter. Some of it was nice though. The stuff about his dad

Two We'll see how it turns out. Nothing said really did anything for me

“We have no desire to ‘adapt’ the twelve issues Mr. Moore and Mr. Gibbons created thirty years ago. Those issues are sacred ground and they will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted."

do they have a budget worthy enough of pulling this off?

Have you seen Westworld at least? HBO when they believe in a show will invest in it. This ain't AMC.

HBO (potentially) have even more cash to throw at a TV show now that the AT&T takeover is complete. They know they need to compete with Netflix.

I wasn't really sold on the idea of this show, but the more I think about it, the more I think it's going to be a really interesting format.
