Written by Simon and long-time collaborator George Pelecanos and directed by Michelle MacLaren (Breaking Bad), The Deuce, which had been in development for awhile, will be the first to go into production in New York this October. Named for 42nd Street, it follows the story of the legalization and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s, exploring the rough-and-tumble world that existed in midtown Manhattan until the rise of HIV, the violence of the cocaine epidemic and the renewed real estate market all ended the bawdy turbulence.

The Deuce was inspired in part by the career of twin brothers who were players in the Times Square world and became fronts for Mob control of the volatile and lucrative sex industry from its origins. Both will be played by Franco.

“We’re interested in what it means when profit is the primary metric for what we call society,” said Simon. “In that sense, this story is intended as neither prurient nor puritan. It’s about a product, and those human beings who created, sold, profited from and suffered with that product.”

The pilot script is by Simon and Pelecanos, with Richard Price (The Color of Money) also credited on subsequent scripts. Simon, Pelecanos, Price, MacLaren and Franco will serve as executive producers, along with longtime Simon collaborator Nina K. Noble. Marc Henry Johnson (A Huey P. Newton Story), who was instrumental in documenting the story, is a producer.

“With The Deuce, I’m pleased to continue a creative collaboration with David Simon and Nina Noble that goes back nearly 15 years, from The Wire through Treme,” says Pelecanos. “Porn, prostitution, pimps, the Mob, after-hours nightlife, institutional corruption, and New York in its Wild West heyday…it’s a world rich in character, and a fascinating story we’re eager to tell.”

Gary Carr went from a roaring twenties Jazz musician romancing Lady Rose on Downton Abbey to playing a ruthless seventies pimp on The Deuce.

I liked the first episode. Haven't seen the second one yet.

Also HBO must be pleased.

HBO has renewed drama series “The Deuce” for a second season.

“We are thrilled to continue our creative collaboration with master storytellers David Simon and George Pelecanos,” said HBO programming president Casey Bloys. “Their unique gift for immersing the audience in their dark and edgy worlds brings a brilliant verisimilitude unlike any other. With the remarkably talented Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Franco leading an exceptional cast, we look forward to delving deeper as this captivating story evolves.”

I'm liking this so far. HBO makes sure to let us know they're HBO with the casual nudity lol

I thought that some of the casting was pretty good but don't know if I'll stick with the series long term yet.

I'm liking the feel and 70's atmosphere of this...

I find the Franco brother's the least interesting part of this but i really like everything else. I love the 70's beng a baby of that era myself. Kinda reminds me of the movie Boogie Nights.

The dynamic between the cops, pimps and working girls is the best element of the show. In fact, unless they ties into the overall story better, they can completely get rid of Franco and Franco. Also good seeing The Wire alum's back in action. Surprised Michael Kenneth Williams isn't in this. He seems tailor made for a role in that era.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is by far the most interesting character on the show.

I also have a crush on Ashley- the working girl who was getting the nude pics taken at the beginning of ep 2. She is the spitting image of a girl i had a crush on in college!

Darlene did not have to rob the old man. He literally just wants her company.

Still enjoying this, but I'm also very wary of this being renewed because HBO did the exact same thing last year with Vinyl- which I still enjoyed- before later changing their mind and pulling the plug on that, too.

But that's not the norm though. In most cases if HBO renew a show its' because they're happy with the ratings. Also Vinyl cost a heck of a lot of money to make and the ratings kept going down.

Well, despite the allegations against James Franco, Season 2 of The Deuce is proceeding with him still on board.

HBO’s “The Deuce” is planning to begin filming its second season in a few weeks with James Franco still on board as star and executive producer of the drama series.

...

At present, the “Deuce” writing staff is at work on scripts for the second season in which Franco’s characters of Frankie and Vincent Martino are integral to the plot. A source close to the situation said there was no alternate plan for storylines should Franco be forced out. Franco said during an appearance on CBS’ “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” in January that many of the accusations leveled against him are “not accurate.”

A fantastic series. It'll weather this storm, though if something really devastating drops; it's a goner.

Well this series just got cancelled and now I'm pissed.

I mean, to say cancel would probably be pulling the plug when Season 2 ends, but HBO did opt to renew and give the series one last season. So like The Leftovers, the show has another season to end on its own terms and wrap up any loose ends.

And it's still two more seasons than Vinyl got.

TBH, I didn't see this having a long run anyway.

Nice little nod to Westworld there in last night's episode. Even though yeah, it was about the movie, all the scene needed was someone to look and wink at the camera when they described the porn parody as robots and sex.

Same I wasn't expecting her character to go out like that, but going back to the first season it makes so much more sense. This season has been great though.
What made me feel even worse for her was how she was treated towards the end of her life. She was beaten, forced into a ganagbang, had her money stolen and just treated like trash. It was really sad.
