So Santa brought me a nice new 19 Inch Widescreen HD TV, I am hoping to go and buy some HD DVD's over the next few days. I already have a DVD player separate. Will the HD DVD's work with the non HD DVD player, or do the DVD's require a HD DVD player to work?

HD DVD's require an HD DVD player.

Can someone explain that to me? I mean, is it a different kind of disk or what?

I'm just worried that everything will go to HD DVD and regular dvds will become obsolete (like VHS tapes).

To put it simply, yes, it's a different kind of disk.

There is currently a format war between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. One of those will replace DVD as the industry standard, just like DVD replaced VHS. This won't happen for another 2-3 years.

HD movies are just higher resolution versions of DVD. When a movie was made on DVD, the quality was downsized to fit on the disc. With HD-DVD's, you can fit more thus better quality.

All films have a much higher resolution then even 1080p
