SO I am watching some of the hd channels, tsn, pbs, discovery.... these all look great. Then i turn to the major networks...abc, nbc, cbs, fox, I get those damn black bars on the sides! wtf........ its NOT true hd, its upconverted sd tv! I called shaw & they said that not all tv shows are recored in widescreen

upconverted sd look s just like sd........ kinda crappy!

wtf

do others get these black bars on the sides

Not all tv shows are broadcast in HD even on a HD channel.

A shows aspect ratio=/=HD. Titus was originally broadcast in HD but it was 4:3 (which would give it the black bars on the side), not 16:9. Also while more and more Canadian networks are going full HD if you buy that channel in HD, US networks only broadcast certain shows in HD. Like Lost will be in HD, and only when it's on, after that SD. And they will probably still be 4:3 ratio.

Damn you major TV networks! Damn you all to hell!

On a PLUS side, the NFL network ownz!

I find HDTV to be pointless...

why pointless, its the 21st century, the era of HIGH DEFINATION!

The era of pricey gimmicks?

The era of words I don't understand.:csad:

AAAHAHHAHAHHA... we need MirlTV network!

Hi def is noticeably superior to Sd broadcasts, besides, I do not pay for my hi def, all you have to do is buy the HD tuner. eh hi def channels are free. I was told to get the HD tuner with the PVR, which I did!

Dude, almost all of network broadcasts are going to be at least digital in the next 5 years, we are slowly moving towards HD. ( On another note, I hope your grandma is doing well)

She's doing pretty good considering, thanks.

exactly..
HD right now does nothing but really double the price of a TV

I have a HDTV 55" and we only paid $1800.00 for it. And I have to say after watching the NFL in HD, I love HD, plus my DVD's look pretty damn good in 480p instead of 480i. Depending on who wins the High Def DVD war, I may have to upgrade to get the 1080i and 1080p viewing experience with my movies.

Too bad it's not the era of correctly spelled words.

Hi def is cutting edge right now. The more hi def I watch, the more sd tv looks out of focus & blurry.... besides, I have a 46 inch HDTV, so its stupid NOT to use it to its full potential, so its Hi DEF for me!

That's how I felt when I bought my HDTV. I mainly wanted it for watching DVD's in my home theater setup, but I went right to Comcast and got the HD receiver and now have their DVR system as well.

HD is fantastic, LOVE watching Discovery on HD. And football!

But yeah, on my cable, there's only about 10 HD channels so far. More and more are being added as time goes by. Within 5 yrs or so, the law is requiring that TV be broadcast in digital format.

Anyhow, the black bars on the sides have nothing to do with HD. They are just not filmed in widescreen format, that's why.

Yes, but those black bars will burn in on some HDTVs! Ok, I was comparing the HDTV broadcast of the Notre Dame vs GA college football tonight. Sd (standard defination) looks blurry compared to HD! Football in HD is freakin AWESOME! But you need to compare the same broadcast in sd & HD. My HDTV box has dual tuners, so I just had on tuner on the HDTV game & the other tuner on the same game but on the sd channel

All I can say is W@W! :wish:
