Ghost Rider,’ ‘Helstrom’ Live-Action Shows Ordered at Hulu

The streaming service has greenlit two live-action shows based on the Marvel comics characters,
Variety has learned. Both shows are expected to launch on Hulu in 2020 and are co-productions of Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios. Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel Television, will executive produce both shows.

Ghost Rider, also known as Robbie Reyes, is consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon. He lives on the Texas/Mexico border and when he unleashes the Rider, Robbie brings vengeance for the innocents he encounters, but struggles to control the power he wields.

Ingrid Escajeda will serve as showrunner and executive producer on “Ghost Rider,” with Paul Zbyszewski also executive producing.

“I couldn’t be more excited and honored to be handed the reins to a Marvel character as beloved as Ghost Rider,” Escajeda said. “This story hits every note for me — my love for grounded yet conflicted characters and my desire to scare the $&!# out of people! It’s important to me to find a take that thrills existing fans as well as wider audiences and I believe we’ve done just that.”

In “Helstrom” (spelled Hellstrom in the comics), Daimon and Ana Helstrom are the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer. The siblings have a complicated dynamic as they track down the terrorizing worst of humanity, each with their attitude and skills. Zbyszewski will serve as showrunner and executive producer.

“As a lifelong Marvel fan, I feel incredibly fortunate to help bring this darker, thrilling corner of the comic book universe to life, and I’m just grateful to everyone at Marvel Television and Hulu for the opportunity,” said Zbyszewski. “Marvel’s known for all the heart, humor, and action they put into every series, but this time around we’re adding some scares to that mix. I think we’ve found a compelling way to dissect some of our deepest fears through the experiences of our two lead characters.”

The two new shows expand an already burgeoning slate of Marvel shows on Hulu. The live-action series “Runaways” is heading into its third season on the streamer. In February, Hulu ordered four animated series based on Marvel properties: Howard the Duck, M.O.D.O.K, Hit-Monkey, and Tigra and Dazzler. The four characters will then team up in the animated special “The Offenders.”

News of the new Marvel shows come after Disney became a majority shareholder in Hulu once the Fox-Disney merger was completed. Disney is also prepping a number of limited series centered on characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the upcoming Disney streaming service, Disney+. Most recently, Variety exclusively reported that a Hawkeye series with Jeremy Renner is in the works. There are also Disney+ limited series in the works that will focus on MCU characters like Falcon and Winter Soldier, as well as Loki, Vision, and Scarlet Witch. The series are expected to be six to eight episodes. The series on the Disney+ will be produced by Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige, who has headed up the MCU for years. The shows are also expected to have large budgets compared to other television projects.

They should of based Hellstrom on Warren Ellis nineties run.

My guess is that they're going to make Marduk Kurios possessed by Satan since they're adjusting the origin story. TBH, I'm more interested to see who they cast as Satana instead of

IMO, even though I really want to see Moon Knight and Blade, I feel like Man-Thing has to be next for this corner of the MCU since Stephanie Szostak is already Ellen Brandt. I'd open the show up with Ellen putting on a new shirt and showing her having electrical burns on her stomach from Iron Man 3. I want to see Ellen trying to turn a new leaf and Monica Rappacini be the new leader of AIM. Ellen wants to save Ted because she wants her husband back, Monica wants to capture Ted and use him as a weapon. Both want Ted to stop hurting innocent people in and around Miami and the Everglades. Ted needs to basically be a mindless animal covered in moss who's mostly acting out of instinct and for self-defense and we'd see very little of Ted since animatronics aren't as scary when you see them all the time, he can't speak and lacks a personality. We mostly see Ted showing up and burning people to death as well as the aftermath of his murders. I also want to see it be a point that Ellen can breathe fire for the same reason why Ted burns people. Extremis. And Ellen is prepared to kill Ted rather than let Monica get her hands on him. If Man-Thing can get renewed, I'd also introduce MODOK here and make him into something really creepy where you'll only see the big head for around five second and no flying since he'd be stuck in a giant server the entire time. MODOK as somebody who starts off simply wanting to be the next step in evolution and becoming another of Monica's horrible monstrosities would be really cool to see.The whole thing should just be about science gone wrong with AIM as a nightmare factory where after MODOK, they create the Entropic Man whose power to kill anything he touches cause him to create a death cult around himself.

Hmm interesting choice, I thought hellstrom would get a movie but this is cool too

Any thoughts on the ComicCon@Home presentation or trailer?

This looks meh, Like really meh, especially after the magnificent Wandavision trailer. This reminds me of New Mulants, not because of any specific similarity in content but because both this and New Mutants share the fact that they were both made by previous regimes that don’t exist anymore — in New Mutants case it was made by Fox, in Helstromm’s case it was made by Marvel Television and the only reason this is seeing the light of day is because they were too deep in post-production by the time there was a change, and there was no other choice but to release it.

Honestly, it still astonishes me that this show even reached the point of *starting* production. Its just such a bizarre choice, that even when they announced it didn't really fit into any larger discernible plan. I'd much rather see an expose on how this show came to be, rather than the show itself.

I want marvel to branch into horror and R rated material so I hope this doesn't flop right out the gate.

I also want Disney/Marvel to stop worrying about tying everything together in a single universe.

I'm two episodes in and I'm in full agreement with you. This never should have made it past pre-production. The Marvel logo isn't even shown before the start of the episodes like on the other shows. Much like New Mutants was released like an unceremonious fart in the wind as the swan song of the Fox Marvel universe, so too is Helstrom for the Jeph Loeb Marvel TV era.

Im watching it and....its very basic. Like we should've gotten an Exorcist revival instead of this.

I would be surprised if this gets a second season.

I'm now in the final episode and its just not very good. Its not boring but I don't feel the suspense and the terror at all. And my mind always wander while watching this.

Hopefully from now on, its just the Disney+ shows that will be airing. I wouldn't watch this if this wasn't a Marvel adaptation.

If it doesn't get a second season. I think it is for the for the best.
For the most part I was enthusiastic.
But they dropped the ball with the finale.
And, I was not interested in what they were planning for season two.

It’s all but guaranteed that this won’t be getting another season. If Marvel Studios had absorbed Marvel TV a few months earlier there probably wouldn’t have even been a first season.

Can someone PM me what happens in the end please? Who lives? Who dies? Any major villains? That sort of stuff please!!

I didn't really pay attention but the Helstrom siblings and their mom weren't killed and they got a happy ending. Iirc, their father was the main villain who can possess people and takeover their body.

The last scene was the child of the male lead was taken by a villain, not sure who the guy was as I didn'treally pay attention.

I was kind of enjoying the first half of this, but it goes completely off the rails in the second half IMO. I know nothing about the source material but the story had me engaged and I actually liked the characters as well as the horror elements that we did get. It's so by the numbers and standard though which gets repetitive after a while and I just sort of lost interest in it towards the end. If this wasn't Marvel related I probably wouldn't have watched it either.

I have a couple more episodes to go and... it's just kinda dull, no one is likeable.
I don't know who this was for?
It's Marvel so I'm here, but I'll be happy when I'm done with it.

I watched it too and thought it was okay. Nothing really stood out about it and it fell into the entire first season as a pilot trap where they drag it out way too long and keep you disinterested the entire way through.

If a second season is greenlit I'll be on the fence watching it.

Finially finished, the best thing about the show, the opening. That I loved, oh and whatever was happening in the closing moments of the finale. Those final moments were more interesting than the season. If there was a season 2 (it's cancelled right?) I'd probably watch from that.

Like the Netflix shows, there was just a lot of streeeeetchiiiiing things out.

That was my thought too. If I did not know it was on Hulu I would have bet it was a Netflix series.

Not the least bit surprising. It was more surprising they even finished filming then airing the series.
