Henry Golding in Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

Which is a good thing, because, uhhh, I'm not exactly hopeful on this movies' chances.

IMHO the pandemic and all these delays certainly haven't helped. I dunno. With a property like GI Joe, I'm not sure if you'd start a reboot with a Snake Eyes Origin story, especially one that appears to be veering so heavily from all the past versions.

Like if Snake Eyes just starts off as some random cage fighter dude while they ignore the loss of his family while he was on tour in the military, I will be largely disappointed.

Based on the footage alone, we aren't going to get very much Snake Eyes in suit and mask action.

I'll be flexible if it's well executed and they don't ignore the crucial elements that I think are important to the character that the past two movies did.

We still haven't seen SS wearing his mask. Really disappoints me.

We see a brief snippet of it at the end.

One thing that kind of ticks me off about movies and shows like this, whenever a character has a cool mask and costume, they always find ways to keep them out of it for the most part. It's been happening for decades. Ever since first Judge Dredd movie, if not earlier.

It's a big reason I respect the first two seasons of The Mandalorian so much.

I remember being blown away when they revealed Alex Murphy/Robocop's face towards the end when removing his battle damaged helmet. It was cool to see that additional emotion from Weller.

But overall, I agree as well with Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow not having their masks on 90-100% in this new feature, I was more annoyed with the issue with Lee Byung-Hun's SS from the first two films.

You are right, they built up to that moment, and RoboCop/Murphy displays a completely different personality. Now that he accepts he was Alex Murphy he almost sounds human again and his voice is less modulated.

The action’s being done by the same guy that choreographed the swordplay in the live-action Rurouni Kenshin film, so I’m already invested on that element alone.

Well, to quote what you’ve said in the past, “we’ll see”.

Yeah I don’t mind Snake Eyes removing his mask (I honestly wouldn’t even mind this in a movie about a fully formed Snake Eyes or Dredd), but it does get a bit annoying when it feels like the character barely wears the mask in the film. I’m glad that at least the Batman films have generally featured a lot of Bruce in the cowl and he doesn’t get it ripped off every time he gets into a fight. But I guess with lesser known masked heroes, movie studios think it’s more acceptable to have them constantly out of their mask or out of costume. To be fair to both the filmmakers and the actor, it’s hard to make a character compelling when his/her entire face is covered (at least in the case of Batman, you can see his mouth and usually his eyes). That’s part of what makes The Mandalorian so good; they managed to pull that off and not just with a dark, ominous character like Vader but a sympathetic hero.

After watching the latest trailer and discussing things here I'm going to give it a chance.

While I have my worries, I'm going in with a low expectation. Such expectation should be met or I could be surprised/pleased.

As some else else stated, since this is an "origin", this could be pre-mute/disfigured Snake-Eyes or could potentially even see that part later in the film.

Time will tell.

It doesn't look awful and who knows the action could be pretty entertaining, but man I have no desire seeing this in a theatre like at all and if it did go direct to streaming it wouldn't have surprised me either.

It just doesn't feel cinema worthy IMO and really I'm looking more forward to how they utilize the cast, especially Samara Weaving, Iko Uwais and Andrew Koji more so than anything else in this movie.

It seems like Storm Shadow will be maskless most of the time, similar to Matrix-inspired Storm Shadow from GI Joe: Reloaded:

Reloaded was basically Devil's Due's attempt at an Ultimate Marvel style retelling for GI JOe.

Look at the bright side though. Even if Snake Eyes is just some random cage fighter at the beginning, well… at least it looks like he actually can win a fight unlike some other cage-fighting protagonists we’ve seen lately.
