Here We Go Again Part 3: New Welling As Superman Rumors?

Thats what they told us back in 2004, too.

And that's how it's always been for Superman, unknowns.

It's the only way to pull off the physical parameters of the character; the height, facial resemblence, proportions etc

Nolan says he admires how Donner cast Superman the Movie, but we'll see how Chris Nolan will handle this. I'm hoping we get a Superman interpretation that outdoes Christopher Reeve instead of following his portrayal.

If Nolan picks Welling then I'm sure many people will backtrack what they said about him and boast "I knew all along that Welling would make a perfect Superman...".

I doubt it.

If they are a bigger fan of the character than the actor, they will be a little disappointed and acknowledge someone else as a better candidate... However they will still see the film, and just hope they manage to edit some good moments out of Welling.

No, not really. George Reeves was a well known actor before taking on the part.

Not sure why pulling off physical characteristics would have anything to do with an actor's popularity or lack thereof?

Not sure you ever "outdo" Reeve, but I'm with you on not following his portrayal.

Good God, you're still here?

Well, I guess if anything I've got to give you a  for persistence

Well known is a bit of an exaggeration.

His only big noteworthy role prior to Superman was a secondary supporting role in "Gone with the Wind" as one of the Tarleton brothers.

He wasn't exactly in the Hollywood mainstream, though it was still more exposure than Reeve, Cain and Routh I suppose.

Hey Prisonmike, I think Routh physically could look the part a lot more with better hair/classic costume. SR screwed up on too many things. Do you think SV fans would be disappointed if Routh were cast again (ya not likely to happen with a new franchise, just like Welling) in the Nolan reboot?

SV fans seem to want Welling, and many general Superman fans don't want Welling and aren't sure about Routh either.

Dammit you guys! I just felt a strange urge to visit this forum and you guys tease me with Welling playing Supes! Damn you all! :argh:

Seriously, here's hoping he gets it. :o

lol:woot:

I agree.

You claim many general Superman fans don't want Welling, but I'm sorry, I don't see that being the case. Can you please provide the proof of your claim? I am curious.
Your posts are the first time I have ever on any internet forum or anywhere on the Internet, heard of Superman fans not wanting Welling to be Superman,

Also, he's going to be Superman on Smallville, so, why would they complain?

I'm more optimisitic about Nolan picking Welling for Superman than I am about him picking Routh. Just for the simple fact that Routh already played Superman on the big screen. Now I still think that Nolan will not want Welling, but he does have a much better chance of getting the role than Routh IMO.

Why would he not want Welling though?
I suppose if he wants to go for a complete unknown, he wouldn't pick Welling.

Because has Welling has ties to Smallville. The audience would think the movie is connected to Smallville if Welling was cast. Same with Routh and Superman Returns.

Oh, yeah. Good point. I understand that. :)
Makes sense. So, maybe it will be someone unknown? As long as they can pull Superman/Clark off, I'm not going to complain.

As long as he's not "based in reality" then I'm ok with it. I'd prefer Welling but I doubt we ever see him in the full costume.

We will see him in full costume, on Smallville anyway.
Maybe not in a movie.

But there's no way they can get away with not having him in the costume on Smallville. :)

Stop acting like those are mutually exclusive groups. Most everyone in this forum was a Superman fan long before Smallville was a gleam in the WB's eye. :word:

In my case, Smallville helped me learn even more about Superman, although I did have a few comics from awhile ago.

But yeah, I became a big Superman fan because of the Christopher Reeves movies and this show.
I don't think it's fair to think a big group of people don't want Tom Welling as Superman.

His posts here are the first time I ever heard of anyone hating the idea.

According to the reports from the SV panel at Comic Con, the Superman suit in season 10 of Smallville is the suit from Superman Returns, but with a brighter cape. Also, Welling was asked if he was ever auditioned (or picked? I'm not sure what the wording was) for playing Superman in a movie, but gave a very cagey response.

Probably means nothing, but I just wonder if these are 2 indicators of anything as regards Welling and a new movie......

I think he just remembers the heat he took for comments that circulated on the web about him not wanting to play Superman. Has to be careful not to get fans upset :o

I'll take this rumor with a pinch of salt.

From whats been quoted/mentioned in the article, yes, he could be talking about Tom Welling & yes, if you combine it with the cagey answer or non-answer he gave at the Smallville panel at Comic Con today in reference to the Superman movie role, you could well have a good arguement.. but then again this "source" (if indeed a legitimate one) could very well & probably 99% NOT talking about Tom Welling & indeed the answer/non-answer he gave at the panel means absolutely nothing.

There are several "popular TV actors" that could fit the Superman bill & would 'please fans', not just Tom Welling. Head over to the casting thread & you can see them all.

In all likelihood, this all means nothing. But I've said it before & I will say it again, at this stage I won't be ruling anyone out on the word of some internet blogger or a proclaimed insider source.

The fact that Ryan Reynolds was cast to play Green Lantern by WB, who has already played Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine & will almost certainly play the character again in Deadpool's own feature film if it gets some legs. As well as Chris Evans being cast as Captain America after previously playing the Human Torch in the 2 fairly successful Fantastic Four films.. well it all makes you wonder that if these 2 actors can play 4 different characters between them, 1 of said actors actually playing 2 from the same universe, then why would Tom Welling's previous association with a TV show containing the character in another universe/version hinder him even being looked at for a movie which is to be completely seperate?
Reynolds & Evans also played said characters in feature films that have been seen by alot more people that will have seen Welling on Smallville..

Time will tell, I'll cross my fingers that its true, but I'm not getting my hopes up. Something tells me that even if this was true & WB/Nolan/whoever did want Tom Welling, would he really want to continue to play the character beyond the 10 years he will have been doing Smallville..? seems doubtful, would probably depend on the color of WB's money but still.

He didn't get 10 seasons because of the show or his acting being amazing. He gets 10 seasons because they don't require much viewership on the CW.

Heroes for example was cancelled because of "low" ratings going from an average of 14.3 million viewers in the United States in season 1 to like 6.5 million or lower in season 4. Still 2 or 3 times that of SV.

Without getting into this whole debate, Heroes was cancelled because it was leaking viewers like a sieve. Whereas Smallville's ratings generally went up & down from year to year. Infact the only year there was a substantial drop in ratings & a successive decline in viewers 2 years running, was the year it went from Thursday to Friday.. which was only last season.

yes we will, in the finale. i don't know why you guys keep saying that?
