FX Orders Drama Pilot From ‘Homeland’s Howard Gordon & Gideon Raff, Craig Wright
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

FX has given a pilot order to Tyrant, a drama from Homeland executive producers Howard Gordon and Gideon Raff, Six Feet Under alum Craig Wright and 20th Century Fox TV’s Fox 21. Tyrant, casually referred to as “reverse Homeland“, was created by Raff, creator of the Israeli drama Prisoners Of War on which Showtime’s Homeland was based. Tyrant, developed by Gordon and Wright, tells the story of an unassuming American family drawn into the workings of a turbulent Middle Eastern nation. Raff wrote the pilot script, which hails from Teakwood Lane, Gordon’s 20th TV-based production company. “The brilliant and wholly original concept just blew us all away,” FX’s EVP Nick Grad said. “It’s pretty amazing when you read a script and can instantly imagine it becoming one of the best shows on television.”

Gordon, Raff and Wright are executive producing in association with Keshet Broadcasting, the Israeli company behind Prisoners Of War, which also co-produces Homeland. Wright is set to serve as showrunner if Tyrant goes to series. For Wright, the project stems from the overall deal he inked with Fox 21 in August. Production on the pilot is tentatively slated to begin in spring 2013. “Tyrant is exactly the type of project we aim to do at Fox 21 — working with extremely talented writer-creators to create provocative material with big, breakout characters and themes,” said Bert Salke, president of Fox 21, which produces flagship FX drama Sons Of Anarchy.

It is rare for FX to hand out a pilot order to a spec, something the cable network does only with A-list auspices it wants to be in business with. It most recently did it with Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s American Horror Story script, which led to a hit series. At FX, Tyrant joins drama pilot The Bridge, now filming, and Guillermo del Toro and Carlton Cuse’s The Strain, which is still being written.

It has been a very successful first development season for Teakwood Lane, which was launched in July. The company has two cable pilot orders, Legends at TNT and Tyrant at FX, and five projects sold to the broadcast networks: Anatomy Of Violence penned by Homeland co-creators Gordon and Alex Gansa, which landed a pilot production commitment at CBS; an untitled adventure drama penned by Shaun Cassidy, which has a put pilot commitment at Fox; legal drama Ritter at NBC, which Gordon is doing with fellow Homeland executive producer Alex Cary; an untitled futuristic thriller for NBC with writer Josh Friedman, which has a script commitment with significant penalty attached; and the Max Landis-penned Vigilant at Fox, which also has penalty.

Gordon and Raff won two Emmys in September for Homeland — sharing a best writing award with Gansa for the pilot and a best drama series award with the rest of the show’s producing team. Gordon is repped by WME and attorney Michael Gendler. WME-repped Wright most recently created and executive produced the MTV series Underemployed. He received an Emmy nomination for his first TV writing gig on HBO’s Six Feet Under.
Pretty much every pilot/series FX has in development sounds potentially awesome, so I'm excited for this.

Ang Lee To Direct FX Pilot ‘Tyrant’ From Howard Gordon, Gideon Raff & Craig Wright
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

On the heels of winning his second directing Oscar for Life Of Pi, Ang Lee will make his television directorial debut with FX‘s high-profile drama pilot Tyrant, from Homeland executive producers Howard Gordon and Gideon Raff and Six Feet Under alum Craig Wright. This represents a major coup for FX and Tyrant producers Fox 21 and FX Prods as Lee had been approached numerous times for pilots, but this is the first one he has committed to. In addition to directing, Lee is executive producing Tyrant, his first project following Life Of Pi. It tells the story of an unassuming American family drawn into the workings of a turbulent Middle Eastern nation. The series was created by Raff and developed by Gordon and Wright. Raff wrote the pilot, which comes from Gordon’s 20th TV-based company Teakwood Lane. “Ang Lee has demonstrated time and again an ability to present characters with such depth and specificity that they reveal the universal human condition,” said FX president John Landgraf. “No one could be a more perfect film maker to bring Howard Gordon, Gideon Raff, and Craig Wright’s Tyrant to indelible life.”

Gordon, Raff and Wright also executive produce in association with Keshet Broadcasting. If Tyrant goes to series, Wright will serve as showrunner. With a huge commitment and A-list creative auspices, Tyrant already was fully expected to go to series, something Landgraf alluded to in January. (Backup scripts had already been commissioned.) Lee’s arrival likely sealed the deal. “The fact that the brilliant Ang Lee has signed on to direct his first project for television speaks to the extraordinary nature of Tyrant,” said Fox 21 president Bert Salke. Production of Tyrant is tentatively slated to begin this summer.

Tyrant keeps Lee in the Fox family. His last four movies, Brokeback Mountain; Lust, Caution; Taking Woodstock and Life Of Pi were all produced/distributed by divisions of Twentieth Century Fox, a sibling to both FX and Fox 21. Lee has won three Oscars, for directing Brokeback Mountain and Life Of Pi and his Best Foreign-Language Film winner, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. His latest film, Life Of Pi, won the most Oscars this year, four, and has grossed more than $600 million worldwide.
Ang Lee on this + GDT adapting The Strain + TONS of great **** already on the air = FX sitting reeeeeal pretty

AMC, get your stuff together. You're being topped like crazy.

Would've been cooler if the premise actually centered around an actual tyrant though. Well, not like a real life one, a fictional one but ya know, a dictator of some sort.

I'm really curious to see what this will look like casting-wise, since The Strain has already got the ball rolling. Between that Homeland prestige the writer/producers have and the pilot being directed by a current Oscar winner, I'm thinking they'll field some pretty great actors.

Ang Lee Departs FX Pilot ‘Tyrant’
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

EXCLUSIVE: Oscar-winning director Ang Lee has pulled from directing high-profile FX drama pilot Tyrant, from Homeland executive producers Howard Gordon and Gideon Raff and Six Feet Under alum Craig Wright. Lee committed to Tyrant shortly after winning a second directing Oscar (and third overall) for Life Of Pie. But after 4.5 years devoted to making Life Of Pie, an year to promote it and another six months of Oscar campaigning, I hear Lee felt he’d hit a wall and didn’t have gas left in the tank. Additionally, he had made other previous commitments, including his current role as a juror at the Cannes Film Festival. I hear Lee called Gordon this morning from Cannes to inform him that won’t be able to proceed. Lee had looked at some scouting locations for Tyrant but was yet to begin actively working on the pilot. It is unclear yet where the project will film, with Morocco and Turkey among the locales discussed. Created by Raff and developed by Gordon and Wright, Tyrant tells the story of an unassuming American family drawn into the workings of a turbulent Middle Eastern nation. Gordon, Raff and Wright executive produce in association with Keshet Broadcasting. The project has a big commitment at FX and is expected to go to series.
Well, ****... hopefully they find someone equally exciting to direct.

David Yates To Direct FX Drama Pilot ‘Tyrant’
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

David Yates, director of the last four Harry Potter movies, has signed on to helm high-profile FX drama pilot Tyrant, from Homeland executive producers Howard Gordon and Gideon Raff and Six Feet Under alum Craig Wright. Yates replaces Ang Lee who originally committed to Tyrant but pulled out last month for personal reasons. Created by Raff and developed by Gordon and Wright, Tyrant tells the story of an unassuming American family drawn into the workings of a turbulent Middle Eastern nation. Gordon, Raff and Wright executive produce in association with Keshet Broadcasting. The Fox 21-produced project, which will film the pilot in Morocco, has a big commitment at FX and is expected to go to series. On the TV side, Brit Yates directed the acclaimed British miniseries State Of Play, which was made into a Hollywood movie starring Russell Crowe and the HBO film The Girl In The Cafe, which earned him an Emmy nomination. He is with CAA, Jenne Casarotto (UK), and attorney Alan Hergott.
I can't complain.

Now that they've got a director, I'm surprised there's not one official castmember yet. The Strain pretty much has it's entire cast already set.

'Mob Doctor's' Jordana Spiro Boards FX Drama From 'Homeland' Duo (Exclusive)
2:30 PM PDT 8/7/2013 by Lesley Goldberg

She joins Justin Kirk in the pilot from Howard Gordon and Gideon Raff.

FX has cast a bride for Justin Kirk.

Mob Doctor's Jordana Spiro has boarded the cable network's drama pilot Tyrant, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

Tyrant hails from Homeland's Howard Gordon and Gideon Raff as well as Six Feet Under's Craig Wright. The drama revolves around an unassuming American Family -- Barry, Molly and their kids -- who are drawn into the workings of a turbulent Middle Eastern nation.

Spiro will play Dana, the wife to Justin Kirk's John Tucker and with whom she works at the American Embassy as a cultural attaché. Spiro, whose credits also include Harry's Law and My Boys, will have a recurring role should the pilot earn a likely series order. (FX is high on Tyrant, with CEO John Landgraf telling reporters in March that a writing staff had already been assembled for the drama, with additional scripts already in the works.)

Raff is set to write the pilot and executive produce alongside Wright and Gordon. David Yates will direct the pilot for Fox 21. FX landed the project in December following a three-way cable bidding war. Raff created and single-handedly wrote every episode of Hatufim, the Israeli series that inspired Showtime's Emmy winning drama Homeland.

Spiro is repped by ICM Partners, Principal Entertainment and Jackoway Tyerman.

Adam Rayner Lands The Lead In Howard Gordon’s Pilot ‘Tyrant’
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

EXCLUSIVE: After an extensive search, British actor Adam Rayner has been cast as the lead in the high-profile drama pilot Tyrant, from Homeland executive producers Howard Gordon and Gideon Raff and Six Feet Under alum Craig Wright. Created by Raff, developed by Gordon and Wright and to be directed by David Yates, FX’s Tyrant tells the story of an unassuming American family — Barry (Rayner), Molly and their kids — drawn into the workings of a turbulent Middle East nation. Gordon, Raff and Wright executive produce in association with Keshet Broadcasting. The Fox 21-produced project, which will film the pilot in Morocco, has a big commitment at FX and is expected to go to series. Rayner, repped by Paula Rosenberg, Innovative Artists and attorney Jamie Feldman, recently played the title role in the Simon West-directed pilot The Saint. He also co-starred opposite Melissa George on the Cinemax/BBC spy drama Hunted.

In a piece The Hollywood Reporter did on Vince Gilligan, they said he was approached to direct the pilot after Ang Lee dropped out.

Only heard about this today, sounds promising. I'd like to know who might jump in to do the pilot, though if Ang Lee was interested enough by it, I'm sure it will draw a quality director. There's too many good shows on right now that I can't keep up with, why does FX have to start being so damn good too?! Later nights are in order i guess.

They alright got David Yates as a replacement.

FX Drama ‘Tyrant’ From Howard Gordon, Gideon Raff, Craig Wright Ordered To Series
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

Exactly a year after FX landed the spec for Tyrant in a competitive situation, the cable network has given the drama project from Homeland co-creators Howard Gordon and Gideon Raff and Six Feet Under alum Craig Wright a series order for a minimum of 10 episodes to debut next summer. Search is underway for a showrunner. The series pickup for Tyrant comes on the heels of FX’s series order to Guillermo del Toro and Carlton Cuse’s The Strain. Along with American Horror Story a couple of fxlogo1years ago, Tyrant and The Strain were the only projects to land FX pilot orders off a pitch/spec. All three had such big commitments that a series order was all but certain and all three had received orders for backup scripts in anticipation of a series pickup. Tyrant, produced by Fox 21 and FX Prods., was the riskiest of the three with its Middle Eastern setting. It did hit several bumps along the way — original director Ang Lee exited, with David Yates stepping in. There were questions about where they series would be filmed (It will be shot in Tel Aviv, Israel after the pilot was done in Morocco.) I hear FX brass had reservations about the first cut of the pilot but loved the final one. “With Tyrant, Howard Gordon, Gideon Raff and Craig Wright have produced a beautiful television pilot that will be a groundbreaking television series,” said FX Networks CEO John Landgraf. “Tyrant introduces characters and a world that have never been explored in a dramatic television series format. There is a reason a bidding war broke out over this project: it grabs you as all great epics do and simply refuses to let go!” Added 20th TV chairmen Dana Walden and Gary Newman, “This is one of the most ambitious series we’ve ever set out to make and we couldn’t be more grateful to John and everyone at FX who believed in its potential since the very first pitch.”

Tyrant tells the story of an unassuming American family drawn into the workings of a turbulent Middle Eastern nation. Bassam “Barry” Al Fayeed (Adam Rayner), the younger son of the dictator of a war-torn nation, ends a self-imposed 20-year exile to return to his homeland, accompanied by his American wife and children, for his nephew’s wedding. Barry’s reluctant homecoming leads to a dramatic clash of cultures as he is thrown back into the familial and national politics of his youth. “From the moment Gideon pitched me the idea, I felt that this was a tremendous opportunity to humanize and dramatize the faces behind the headlines that we read about every day,” said Gordon. “We’ll also get to explore on the tension between power and family loyalty.”

Tyrant was created by Raff and developed by Gordon and Wright, with Raff writing the pilot. and comes from Gordon’s 20th TV-based Teakwood Lane. Gordon, Raff and Wright are executive producers in association with Keshet Broadcasting. Tyrant‘s ensemble cast also includes Adam Rayner, Jennifer Finnigan, Ashraf Barhom, Moran Atias, Noah Silver, Anne Winters, Fares Fares, Salim Daw, Justin Kirk, Jordana Spiro, Mehdi Dehbi, and Alice Krige. Of the 18 drama pilots produced by FX since 2004, 15 have been ordered to series including Rescue Me, Over There, Thief, Dirt, The Riches, Damages, Sons of Anarchy, Justified, Lights Out, Terriers, American Horror Story, The Americans, The Bridge, The Strain, and Tyrant.

Feels like ages but good news. I don't want to be this guy and making such a big deal but I was hoping they'd dare to cast a middle-eastern actor for the lead but he does seem beliveable as a middle-eastern so yeah.

 to casting two good Swedish actors.

TCA: ‘Tyrant’ Producer To Detractors: “Bring It On!”
By THE DEADLINE TEAM

During today’s TCA panel on the new FX drama Tyrant, Howard Gordon and Gideon Raff — who executive produce with Craig Wright — compared the story of an American family drawn into the workings of a turbulent fictional Middle Eastern nation to The Godfather. That is, as much family drama as political thriller. If there is a larger theme to the series, Gordon said, it is, “What does it mean to be a good man?”

After the panel, Gordon addressed recent grumblings that the team’s popular Showtime series Homeland may have veered too far in the “family” direction by playing out the story of Brody’s troubled daughter and her disturbed boyfriend. Gordon said he doesn’t see it that way. That story line, he said, was necessary to show the “collateral damage” to the families of the political story. “I just think people got impatient with it,” Gordon added.

During the Tyrant panel, a reporter asked whether the producers had any qualms about naming their lead character, an assimilated Middle Easterner, Barry. (Bassam “Barry” Al Fayeed is played by Adam Rayner.) The implication was that “Barry” is too close for comfort to the name (and nickname) of President Barack Obama. He was asked whether Fox News would have a field day with this.

“Bring it on!”crowed Gordon. “If you saw the calluses on my back — you just have to really keep your own counsel of people that you trust. I think this will be a Rorschach test. People will see what they want to see in it. I’ve been called an Islamophobe and a torture monster. What else can they call me?”

Cool to see them say the exact same thing as I was about Homeland melodrama. Can't wait for this show

I was bit worried they wouldn't move forward with the series when it was all quiet. But I'm glad it did because there's a lot of potential here.

[YT]G2Fab8y_yKA[/YT]
They also showed a little bit of footage during one of the commercial breaks during Fargo, but I can't find it.
