I'm not Homophobic in the slightest, but I do think comics in general becoming too political...at a certain point turning "out" characters becomes a cheap device..and I think DC is well beyond this point.
This goes for turning legacy heroes into minorities as well. It's just gone too far , whereas it comes off as cheap, and superficial.
Take for example Alan Scott, who has been an established character since the 40s or 50s. Some readers have a serious "investment" of who he is and who he was developed as , during that 50 years of prior history.
You also have to take a look at what "homophobic" means. I am telling you I have no problem with Homosexual rights, marriage and those who are gay being treated as I would want to be treated myself. I accept them as what they are...BUT that doesnt mean I suddenly want to read stories and serial fiction of "man on man" romance (or vice versa) or tales involving homosexuality. Feeling uncomfortable or disinterested in books with this laid heavy( or really any big sexual issues) doesnt mean your Homophobic. In other words tolerance and acceptance does not equal an interest.
In the old world, Alan Scott had kids and was not gay. Now he suddenly is... without any real lead in that this was part of his character. Plus you ask "will that change your opinion on green lantern"...answer is no, but it does annoy me and factor into my view of the writers..who are the guys calling the shots on character development. (becuase of what i stated before). It's no different than me being annoyed with the writers of Operation Galactic Storm for making cap a whiney ***** who wouldnt want to take out Supreme Intelligence as he was going to destroy the earth. As we talked about in another thread, out of character and continuity issues can sometimes effect quality.
Now "new 52" means reboots that literally break down this wall...so within that the change is more acceptable...i guess. i still think it's become a cheap device at DC and I don't think highly of this new Alan Scott deal.
