Who better to play the Master of Suspense than the man behind cinema's scariest psycho? Hannibal Lecter, or Anthony Hopkins as he prefers to be known, has confirmed to MTV.com that he will play Alfred Hitchcock in an upcoming biopic, to be directed by Ryan Murphy (Running With Scissors).

Hopkins also told the site that the film will open with the making of Psycho. There's a video interview on the site, but we can't watch it because it's only accessible to viewers in the US (because the internet isn't a global commodity or anything, sheesh). If anyone can view it then please feel free to add any extra info in the comments section below.

Hopkins seems like a great choice for Hitchcock. He hasn't quite got that beaky, chinny look, but a few months on an all pasta diet could probably sort that out. It's also good news that Murphy's using the making of Psycho as the backdrop. If this is to delve into the director's slightly odd ways, including his (rather creepy) obsession with blondes, then Psycho seems the perfect place to do it, with stories of his leering over Janet Leigh's shower scene. Rumours are also circulating that Helen Mirren might play Hitchcock's wife.

Murphy's got the fifth season of his TV show Nip/Tuck to work on, as well as developing Dirty Tricks with Brad Pitt and Need with Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts, so it may be some time before this shoots.

Great casting. Not sure about the movie, however. I mean Psycho (outside of arguably Birds) was Hitchcock's last great one and late in his career. It was downhill after that. I would think you'd want to start when he first came to America to make Rebecca or start with Shadow of a Doubt (his favorite film he never made) or Rear Window....I'd say start at least in the '50s as that was his golden era.

We'll see.

Can Sir Anthony do a Cockney accent?

As much as I love Hopkins, I don't think this is a good choice. He's in his 70s. I'd much rather a biopic that covers most of his life. But I'll have to settle for this.

Hopkins is a great actor but looks absolutly nothing like Hitchcock. I would have preferred a new named actor who fit the look and could do a decent job.

I'm not so sure if you can tell an interesting story in this flick. I mean, he wasn't known for having a very eccentric lifestyle or having great tragedies in his life that make for good drama etc. Are we gonna see Hitch sitting in front of his fireplace reading a book and ocasionally shooting a movie?

I remember E! saying he was party guy and sex addict.

E! says that about everybody. Did you see their show about Pope Benedictus XVI?

bob hoskins would of been a better choice

What can they really tell about Hitch? It would be better if they made a League of Extraordinary Directors, where Hitchcock, Kubrick, Kurosawa, Scorsese and Spielberg team up to defeat the evil Haxis, comprised of Brett Ratner, Michael Bay, and the truly evil Uwe Boll.

anyone see the hitchcock exibit at universal

I'd pay to see that. :D

Maybe we'll see him duke it out with Ray Chandler.:ninja:

Interesting. Hopkins is a legend and Hitchcock is a god, no questions there. We'll just have to see how this one pans out.

Weird... I think I'd prefer a documentary over this but, hey, I'll take it.

WTF??? Isn't this guy already playing Marlon Brando????

Hopkins is one of the worlds greatest actors IMO he is so great at playing different characters He is great portraying Nixon as a man who was intellectually smart but didnt have that look and personality the media love. Road to wellvile where he plays the eccentric Kellog.Remains of the day, hannibull lecter i could go on but you get the point the one big shame for me is that he didnt get to play alafred pennyworth in Batman Begins he would have been far better then Micheal "cockney" Cain because he is light years ahead in acting ability.

Has anyone seen Bodonovich's (sp?) documentary on Hitch's life and career. It is amazingly riveting stuff. If they could make a movie that is a smaller truncated version of that I'd see it, even if there is no major drama other than fighting iwth Hollywood execs and figuring out how to make films, shots and blondes work.

I can't say anything right now, so I will wait for more info to come out. What about Hopkins, I don't know, it looks like he has already played in tens biopics and I am really get sick of seeing another intersting person in the world history played by him.
