Science continues its relentless drive to find how literally everything will give you cancer. It should be noted though this is far from conclusive. But it won't stop the media from telling us how this study found yet another cancer causing agent. It also won't stop people from finding a way to exploit this for their own agendas.

With this much cancer going around I just say to hell with it, eat and drink what you want. At least when you get cancer it will be worth it. :o

Anyone who likes to curl up with a steaming hot drink should consider letting some of that warmth subside; drinking it could increase their risk of developing cancer.

In a review published today by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the cancer agency of the World Health Organization, drinking very hot beverages was classified as "probably carcinogenic to humans."

More specifically, the review by a panel of global experts stated that drinking beverages at temperatures above 65 degrees Celsius -- 149 degrees Fahrenheit -- could cause people to develop cancer of their esophagus, the eighth most common form of cancer worldwide. Drinking tea, coffee or other hot beverages at this temperature can cause significant scald burns in the esophagus when they're consumed and has previously been linked to an increased cancer risk in this part of the body.

Warm beverages are not typically consumed this hot in Europe and North America, but are commonly served at, or above, this temperature in regions such as South America, the Middle East and East Africa -- particularly when drinking teas. It's hotter than water coming out of sink faucets, which is typically no higher than 60 degrees Celsius, about 140 degrees Fahrenheit, but not as hot as boiling water. Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius, or 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

The 65 degree Celsius temperature noted by the cancer research agency is enough to burn your tongue and and according to the American Burn Association, skin contact with a liquid this hot can result in almost instantaneous burns if prolonged.
It goes on and on in the CNN link there.

Everything causes cancer.

The number 1 risk factor for cancer is age. We're seeing increased rates because people are getting older. Which means we've come a long way since diarrhea was fatal.

Cancer is seriously overblown.

Edit: And if you adjust for age and smoking, cancer rates are actually decreasing.

That is true. Cancer now has time to actually kill people as opposed to the numerous other things that used to do it instead and kill people earlier.

Next thing we know, being on the Hype causes cancer. :o

I was scrolling Bookface the other day and saw an article on one of the science pages I follow that basically said cancer is an evolutionary byproduct to keep the species from proliferating too much. Didn't read the article so don't know much more than the headline but if that's the case it has not been very effective haha.

I don't consume any hot drinks so I guess I'm safe.

But I think the headline is kind of misleading. Something "causing" cancer sounds much more dangerous than something "increasing the risk" of cancer.

Who would drink a hot beverage that is 149 degree in Fahrenheit?

Beverage tour is over boyos. Time to lay down and roose

I can assure you people, this does not cause cancer... it CURES it.

Cancer causes cancer. Did you know that?

And all of a sudden my throat and esophagus are starting to sting a little more, my coffees at work are only being sipped the few times before being flushed down the drain, and I just have a greater overall uneasy feeling about drinking hot stuff. Thanks a lot guys, thanks a lot ....
