^^^ Well, that's all fair enough. There is an obsession with box office statistics, with using them to try to validate opinions and online commentators (usually on blogs) who read things into figures in an attempt to look authoritative.
it happened here recently when LS tried to say Wolverine was a 'flop' despite the fact it made 2.5 times its published budget. People want it to be categorised as an all-round failure because they want the studio to try harder next time, or they want to make the studio look bad. Somehow, to say the film isn't a flop is seen as encouraging more of the same next time.
Box office figures are used as weapons. It's all to do with politics, lobbying and campaigning. People are desperate for films that they disliked (or which had mixed reviews) to get what they deserve by being utter disasters, to send a message to the studio.
But it's not that simple.
