Hot Wheels Movie Buzz

Status update on the long-in-development Mattel toy-to-film.

by Jim Vejvoda

January 1, 2009 - Warner Bros. is actively developing a feature film version of the classic Mattel toyline Hot Wheels with Speed Racer producer Joel Silver.

According to Variety, a screenplay for the project has been penned by Burn Notice scribe Matt Nix. A movie version of Hot Wheels has been cruising around Hollywood for several years, with Sony Pictures and director McG developing it at one point.

The trade says that various takes on how to realize the story-less franchise as a film have been pitched through the years, with hit movies such as Mad Max and The Fast and the Furious suggested as models.

"There's a huge scope of what you can do [with Hot Wheels]," Mattel VP for entertainment and marketing Barry Waldo informed Variety. "It's a billion-dollar brand for us. We want to continue making it relevant for kids."

The exec added, "We won't have the cars talk. ... That would be off brand position for us. It won't be another Knight Rider, I promise that

Speed Racer was basically as awesome as a Hot Wheels film could possibly get. Why bother? If a film as good as that could fail, how can they make this work?

lolz what is the point of this? How can they make a film out of this?

That's exactly the point. They're going to make one.

It's what people call, "an original idea", the kind that "Hollywood has run out of". :o Any idea has to come from somewhere, ya know.

Unlike some remake or an adaptation, they're building a story from scratch...kinda. That's something kinda to look forward to. :p

It's safe to say that it'll be visually influenced with a mix between Speed Racer and Fast and the Furious.

Original idea? How can you make a film out of toys? Toys that are crap? Micro Machines FTMFW!

I completely agree. This is a terrible idea. Might as well have a cameo from Barbie.

Of course they should save that for the R rated version:p

Hot Wheels... They must be handing out some strong **** in their offices again.

I wonder how long till we hear an announcement of a Polly Pocket Movie in the works.

I can picture the trailers now. "From the producers of Speed Racer... comes a movie just like it."

To heck with Hot Wheels - I want the Hungry Hungry Hippos movie, dammit!

Screw that, I want the Pop up Pirate next.

Do these Hollyweird fools have **** for brains, what fool in a meeting said hey bob you know what would make a great film? Whats that Jim? Hot wheels trust me its a guranteed hit.

Okay, so let's see... we're making movies based on toys now, as well as board games (Monopoly)... what's next? What other random objects just scream MAKE A MOVIE OUT OF ME EVEN THOUGH I HAVE NO PLOT WHATSOEVER TO BASE ANYTHING OFF OF?

Here are a few other possible inspirations for future summer blockbusters:

Lawn Mowers
Coke Bottles
Desks
Tiled Floors
Spam
Lint
Toenail Fungus
Bumper Stickers

Lawn Mowers sounds like an 80's comedy about greenkeepers or 2 dads trying to out do each other... either that or a porno.

Toy properties dying for a movie:

C.O.P.S.

Dragonflyz

Barbie(they were going to do this, but I think they could do it if they make it somewhat of a satire...have Amy Heckerling or Betty Thomas direct)

Risk

Heroscape(anyone who has played this game knows the concept would be crazy as **** on screen)
