'Star Trek Beyond' director Justin Lin tackling 'Hot Wheels' for Legendary:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/star-trek-beyond-director-justin-933236

The Star Trek Beyond filmmaker has closed a deal to develop, direct and produce, via his Perfect Storm Entertainment, a feature based on popular car toyline from Mattel.

Lin and Perfect Storm will also have an option to co-finance the project.

A Hot Wheels movie has been made, despite iterations being in development since 2003. McG was at one point attached to direct and produce for Columbia before it landed in the garage of Joel Silver and Warners. Legendary picked up the rights in earlier this decade. Simon Crane came on board to direct it in 2013 but the project has been sitting idle since 2014.

Lin’s boarding injects some nitrous oxide into the project; Lin, his partner Troy Craig Poon, and Legendary will begin a search for a writer to take Hot Wheels back to the starting line. The project is in the early development stages and will not be Lin’s next movie.

Hot Wheels is one of the world’s biggest toy brands, with Mattel claiming that it is the best-selling toy in the world, with more than 5 billion toy cars produced since 1968. Mattel creates nine million cars every week and sells 10 every second.

Legendary’s Alex Garcia will oversee for the company.

Mattel is slowly making inroads into Hollywood and has Max Steel, based on its action figures, opening October 14. In development are movie projects based on Masters of the Universe and Barbie, both set up at Sony, and Monster High, set up at Universal.

The Fast & Furious movies are basically live-action Hot Wheels adaptations, so he should feel right at home with directing this.

Hot Wheels, leadin' the way!

I want to see a grim dark reimagining of all those giant orange loop tracks.

Hell, just make a Battle Force 5 movie.

EDIT.

Wrong director.

Justin Lin, John Chu, and James Wan should all just get together and direct a giant epic Asian setpiece something or other.

I'm still waiting for that collaboration between Ang Lee and his brother Spike.

Separated at birth those two were.

So what movie is he doing next exactly - I wanna see Space Jam 2 while Lebron is still in fire.

Mattel Launches Film Division, Names Oscar-Nominated ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ Producer Robbie Brenner As Head

Mattel, the popular toy company behind such brands as Barbie, Masters of the Universe, Hot Wheels and Thomas and Friends, is launching Mattel Films, a new division focused on developing and producing motion pictures based on the brand’s iconic franchises.

Oscar-nominated producer Robbie Brenner has been appointed to lead Mattel Films as executive producer, reporting to Ynon Kreiz, Mattel’s chairman and CEO.

It better have the original theme song...

I hope this movie will be like Toy Story mixed with Speed Racer. Have it be actual toys racing around a giant house.

Hot Wheels Movie In Works For Mattel, Warner Bros

At the risk of revving up a chorus of ‘Hollywood has officially run out of ideas,’ Mattel and Warner Bros announced they are partnering in a movie based on Hot Wheels, the toyline of small cars that run on those orange tracks. It’s the second property Mattel has long tried to turn in a movie, and set new versions at Warner Bros. The other is Barbie, which has seen Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway drop in and out before Sony exited. They are trying again with Margot Robbie.

Are they just gathering up all the toy brands and making movies out of 'em?
