Really, I don't understand. The guy was a fascist and supremacist. Of course, Theodoro Roosevelt did some good things, also Hitler and Mussolini, but they are not considered as "GREAT" presidents. On the contrary, the world hates them, and that's ok, because they deserve it. I'm just saying the same reasoning should be applied to him.

Read some of Teddy's quotes:

  • "The presence of the negro is the real problem; slavery is merely the worst possible method of solving the problem"
  • "The african porters are strong, patient, good-humored savages, with something childlike about them that makes one really fond of them. Of course, like all savages and most children, they have their limitations."
  • "Nothing but sheer evil has come from the victories of Turk and Tartar. This is true generally of the victories of barbarians of low racials characteristics over gentler, more moral, and more refined people"
  • "I don't go so far as to think that the only good Indians are dead Indians, but I believe nine out of ten are"
  • "It was out of question that the texans should long continue under Mexican rule (...) it was out of question to expect them to submit to the mastery of the weaker race"
  • “It’s part of the order of nature that white europeans should destroy mexicans, the natural prey of superior Anglo-Saxons”
  • "I have always believed that it would also be necessary to give te national government complete power over the organization and capitalization of all business concerns engaged in inter-state commerce"
The guy was a monster. Period.

Why do people believe FDR was a good president? He had the Japanese put in internment camps after Pearl Harbor.

Why do people believe Jefferson was a good president? He owned slaves, and was against abolition. Same thing with Washington.

Every president has significant faults. TR is just another one of them.

It's no the same. There is no comparison (at least with the case of FDR). TR had too many and too big faults...

The guy was just insane...

Uh huh....

It's not the same because Teddy Roosevelt was an evil, rotten Republican like teh Bushez.

:whatever:

Roosevelt did some good truly great things as President, such as conserving national parks and basically setting the Reform movement in motion.

But he was also a racist and damaged our policy of isolationism with his imperialist conquests of Cuba and the Panama Canal.

This the stuff you don't hear aboutTheodore Roosevelt in History class . :cwink:

We touched on some of his beliefs in Constitutional Law when I was in college.

mmm..I dont care if he was republican (I'm not democrat, I'm not republican, I'm not even American). My point is that you can't compare a president like Theodoro Roosevelt who had fascist, supremacist and imperialist ideas, a man who continually applied the policy of "The Big Stick" towards other countries, with Franklin Roosevelt. He always prefered to talk and negotiate, he was a man who, for example, led the policy of "The Good Neighbor" ending 40 years of invasions and occupations in Latinamerica.
They are polar opposites. The only thing in common they have are the surnames. Give me a break...

'Speak softly and carry a big stick' means to put diplomacy first, but to always keep military force as a second resort. It doesn't mean go around and thump other nations on the head for no reason. Because we refused to talk, we were in blunders like Vietnam and Iraq. Every other time we used diplomacy, WWI, WWII and Korea, we emerged as winners. Same thing with the Cuban Missile Crisis (do you think the USSR would have submitted to our demands if we didn't have the same military might?) and China (diplomacy especially worked with Nixon and Mao).

Besides, no one is bashing FDR. I just find it to be a strange double standard that you are willing to knock Teddy Roosevelt without knocking FDR. Teddy never actually imprisoned Mexicans and the like. FDR imprisoned the Japanese, simply because of their ethnicity. That's kind of why you can't be taken too seriously...

Wow it amaze me how little you know about what TR actually did. First of all, if you think that "The Big Stick" policy was "put diplomacy first", then you are quite naive...

Secondly, you are right, TR never imprisoned mexicans, he just occupied Cuba, supported rebels in Panama and Nicaragua and intervined the Economies of several caribbean countries threatening with the use of force. For what? Pure imperialism. Of course, in his way of thinking, his government had "the right to knock their heads until they should maintain peace" because ultimately, latinos are an "inferior race". Yeah, he was just like FDR... :whatever:

Really, you can't justify the injustifiable.

But that's what it was-- it was designed to put diplomacy first but keep military force on the table as well. That's what the policy was at its core. Read "Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" and "Theodore Rex" by Edmund Morris and maybe you'll understand how this policy was formed.

I'm not really justifying anything TR did. I'm just saying, I find it to be a huge double standard that you are willing to slam TR, but not FDR, Jefferson, or Washington when they all have pretty big stains on their record regarding white supremacy...

No President is perfect.

Teddy was a bigot, yes...but Washington and Jefferson had slaves. Woodrow Wilson declared "Birth of a Nation" to be one of the most historically accurate movies ever. And by all accounts, Abe Lincoln was a notorious ass hole.

I made that last one up, but my point is, they are all just products of their time. You can't really condemn a President who was born in a time where racism was not only acceptable but encouraged for being racist. They were raised knowing it was not only okay but insisted upon to be such. It doesn't change their historical legacy or their accomplishments as President.

I completely back Matt and jmanspice on this issue.

hahahaha! Mexicans are the natural prey of superior Anglo Saxons?
I missed that episode of Nature on PBS.

True, but Andrew Jackson was pretty close to perfect. I mean he freaking dueled with pistols on the White House lawn and beat people mercilessly with his cane. These things alone made him almost perfect.

You are right, you can't compared FDR to Teddy Roosevelt. FDR imprisoned thousands of innocent American's based on race and nationality. That is far worse than anything TR ever did.

Not only that, FDR was a devote Fascist that was looked up to by Mussolini. That's not an easy feat to accomplish.

It is all about perspective. Teddy Roosevelt did more for this country than Ronald Reagan or Bill Clinton, but the way both parties hold those two men up you'd think they worked side by side Jefferson, Adams, Franklin, Hamilton, etc.
