If it comes out too fast on DVD, or takes a while to come out? Or neither?

The DVD doesn't really have that much of a bearing. People say if it goes straight to dtv it must have sucked, but there are studios that want their top grossers realeased on dvd faster so they can get more revenue.

Well, more often it will be the low grossers that are released on DVD sooner. The high grossers tend to remain in theaters longer and then are released later in order to rebuild that excitement for the movie. Look at Spider-man 3.

As far as telling how well a movie did, simply look at it's BO numbers and compare it to its budget and length of run, etc.

Having worked at a theatre, I always judged this by how fast it started losing show times. For example, opening night, the movie is on 2 or 3 screens, showing about once every hour or so. If the next week it's on one screen showing every three hours, it tanked. That help?

That doesn't tell whether or not a movie is good though. Just audience perception- look at Shawshank for example.

The greatest way to tell- watch it and decide whether or not you like it.

But the question wasn't about the quality of the film, only if it "did good or bad" which I'm guessing means profit.

I would think it meant quality. And I decide if a movie is good or bad based on my own perception. I often disagree with critics or sites like rotten tomatoes.

In the states Transformers is only coming out three months after its release but preformed as one of the summers better movies. While POTC3 did okay it came out May in theaters and hits dvd in december. thats about 7 months double the time of TF's.

I guess its just about when the studio's wanna release it.

Well, with POTC, that's just Disney trying to capitalize on Christmas.

Oops. Well yeah, the example of the drop off in showings is a good indication, then.

What's sad is that sometimes even good movies have low sales for other reasons, such as marketing, distribution, etc. But that wasn't the question. :woot:

the only way to tell is if it made more money than its budget, sometimes its not the movies fault , due to limited release and it not being marketed properly.

Or being released in a crowded summer with no real room to do buisiness with 3 or 4 new movies coming out every week.

DVD's are made before movie opens. If it seems like it just came out; it usually did ****ty.

If you're talking critically and financially I'd mention rotten tomatoes. It gives a review for the movie and posts its profit while it is or was in theaters.

Pirates only did ok? It was still in the top 5 grossing movies of the year.

the brave one did ok , pirates knocked it out of the park

Usually a DVD commentary is done before the films release.....some directors will even say that they are doing the commentary and the movie will be out in about a week or so.....
