How did Thanos lose GodHood?

I have heard many different interpretations and I never read the comic where it explains HOW Thanos lost the power. I hear cause he was tricked, self-doubt, that he was too weak? I heard it all and I was wondering does anyone know the definite answer?!

According to Adam Warlock (in IG #5?), Thanos sub-consciously set up the opportunity to lose the power. Supposedly, deep down, he felt that he wasn't worthy of the power. I could be wrong in my memory; it's been a long while since I read the IG story.
