How do I type using numbers and symbols on my xbox 360? The two buttons that do it don't work.

There are some places where you can't use them, for whatever random reason.

when I'm in the type in email address thing, the two buttons that say Symbols and Accents are not highlighted and don't work.

The numbers should just be right next to the keyboard, not on the symbols or accents page.

I really don't see how this would be caused by my system. Is there a way to change how the keyboard is set up? All I have are the letters and the columns on either side that tell what buttons do.
