I personally think that it's very important,it makes me feel good and boost's my self-esteem. My question only applies to people only if it mean's something to them.

I can take people a little more seriously if they have at least, a halfway decent one.

I don't think that enough people take advantage of it.

Vocabulary is a free skill. It doesn't take much to broaden it. But it's not 'cool' to sit around reading books, so most people don't.

It's not important, but it's a nice thing to have. Kinda like a cake.

Also, thinking you have a good vocabulary can make you look like a *****ebag.

I think it's necessary if you want people to take you seriously or if you want to seem like you are educated/intelligent. People underestimate the necessity of having a proper vocabulary.

I r talk good y u git agri wid me for spak gud?

:p

It's only important if you're adamant about not sounding like an uneducated twit. Otherwise it's nothing

The fact that this is a question makes me feel very sad...

The fact that many will say it means nothing, will make me want to quit my job as a teacher...

lol

I ain't not that bad with talking fancy.

it's important to me. i'm very proud of my intelligence and my education.

Vocabulary is not important unless you feel the need to make an impression to people that you might be able to communicate above the level of today's average teenager who relies too heavily upon text speak and Firefox to correct their ignorance of the English language.

"You're not from around here, are you?"

"Da @#$% you think you is, Galileo?"

Just a couple of the more funny/silly comments I've heard for speaking like someone with a decent grasp of english. Still haven't figured out what Galileo has to do with vocabulary...

You did catch the part where I said that the question is directed to the people who post on this website, right?

Yeah....so?

Haha, it's funny because those wacky scots mangle the language. :o

If you can turn it on and off at will, there isn't a problem. I use slang and speak more casually around family and friends than I do at work or in public with a stranger.

I think a good vocabulary is extremely important. However, I sometimes think my vocabulary may be a little too advanced... I find that I sometimes pick the less common word unintentionally and then have to explain myself in more common terms.

Actual conversation:

Me: "Look, over there, a dirigible"

Companion: "A what?"

Me: "A dirigible, a steerable, flying balloon"

Companion: "Do you mean a blimp?"

Of course it's important to have a good vocabulary, however just because you know a lot of long, obscure words doesn't mean you have to use them. There are very few things that are more annoying than someone who sounds like they've just swallowed a thesaurus.

In the adult world, it is absolutely essential. In fact, I think is the most important tool for making a good impression. In a job interview, shopping for a car, getting employee assisstance in a store, etc., nothing commands respect like a strong vocabulary. Even if you happen to be wearing a $500 suit or dress, you'll see the change in stranger's demeanor if they peg you for a twit.

Take it from an old guy, Hypsters, proper grammar is your friend. Read those books and arm yourself! Save the hipster slang and colloquialisms for your buddies and/or family.

Yeah....so?

My point is that it shouldn't have been sad to you that I asked this question. If I had pre-existing knowledge about how much people value a good vocabulary here before I made this thread then I wouldn't have asked. :oldrazz:
