well, its making them money, so quite a while

I'm pretty sure they want everybody to have a PS3, dropping the price and all, they want their focus to be on the PS3, so, I'd say within the next year games will probably be stopping production in the PS2 department, but you'll get your lackluster games and your Madden! HAHA.

The last PS1 game came out in 2005, 11 years after the system hit. If they were to follow in the same footsteps then theoretically, the last PS2 game should come out in 2011

Hopefully for a while. I'm not planning on buying a PS3 any time soon.

Mid 2008 for mass production, bigger games will be PS3 only by the end of next year, EA will still release their yearly sports franchise and other big games will still be available until 2009... so realistically you're talking 2010 which like Havok mentions above seems like a good timeframe if they follow their routine

so bascially the only games that will come out for ps2 are Sports games and crappy movie tie ins.

The UK release list has 22 sport related games with 47 listed... that's just under half of the games

They can not give up on the Playstation 2 anytime soon because that is the peoples only source for Fony backwards compatibility. They stuck themselves in a corner & can not get rid of the Playstation 2. The games might eventually stop production but the system will be here to stay unless they add backwards compatibility to the 40 gig.

They didnt stick themselves into a corner. The original plan for the PS2 is for it to have a 10 year life span. All signs point to that just happening. They are milking money out of that system and thats exactly what they wanted.

Not necesarily. Here is list of games coming to the PS2 and while not impressive, its not just sports or movie tie ins

It's very much a list of games you see at the end of a consoles life span. Just a bunch of junk for kids, basically titles for parents to buy little kids before they're old enough to play the new systems.

the suposedly said during e3 07 games were to slow down in production during the latter part of summer but that didnt pan out.......but they have to do it sometime soon supporting mutiple consoles at one times is not good business just ask sega how that worked out. they had the genesis with full support in some countries, the 32x in others, saturn in a couple, gamegear in a few, ant etc. it just became a horrible mess to sort out and finally it took its toll. in sony's case by supporting the cheaper system the provides no incentive to trade up the average joe says "why should i get a ps3 when great games are still coming out for the ps2." Also they need to drop support because big titles that once brought in high revenue are not doing so now. case in point EA (lets not talk about quality of games for now) they have not been making as much money off their sports games on the ps2 they once did, meaning they are after a while going to move on(though they cant due to nfl licence). So sony i know you love to remince in the good 'ol days but you've got to move on and get your head in gear.

They have essentially moved on, look through the list and point out the big time exclusive games. They're all ports or quick buck games, they aren't producing any more system sellers, God of War 2 was the last one. Also, Sega's problem wasn't supporting too many systems, it was not getting third parties on board the Saturn and Dreamcast and letting too many high profile games like Mortal Kombat 3 and Doom go exclusively to Playstation.

true and thats a smart move. Once people started moving onto the PS2, hte PS1 got ridiculously cheap and they released the smaller PSONE model which was more kid friendly. Being relatively inexpensive, parents were more likely to pick up the sytem for children and developers catered to that. A $99 system was alot more attractive than a new $299 one. When I was moving onto the PS2, I saw some of my 6-9 year old cousins starting to get PSONES. Little kids and parents definetly, dont care or worry much about next gen technology and the latest graphics.

Playstation two game sales were still the highest in the market last time I checked.

Now granted, that was before Halo 3, so it might of shifted, but pretty sure playstation 2's sell more units AND games than the rest.

It may sound ridiculous, but the infos out there somewhere.

not saying ps2 still dont sell but ea themselves said their sports games are not bring in the numbers they used to on the platform meaning either people are moving on to other systems or people just dont care for the games on the ps2.

and amazing it was partly because they couldnt get developers for the saturn but also because of them having multiple systems being supported at the same time. sega though if one system was still doing good in one country they should continue support even if some countries supported the saturn.

like for example when nintendo moved to the gamecube n64 support was already gone or in the process of closing up, meaning in 2001 no one was still trying to get a cartrige oublished because there was no point, nintendo cut off support period. and unless you were in japan where companies let you get away with publishing games for a dead system then you would either get to work putting your game on a disk or just start fresh.

sega on the other hand tried to juggle multiple systems at one time the saturn in na, the genesis in la, the 32x in euro, the saturn ant etc. in japan. they never really gave a cut off time for publishers to move on to a system, because they thought "hey the genesis is still making money in latin america lets not push the saturn there just yet" making it a complete mess for publishers to make their games, north america has moved onto the saturn but the pal reion still has a large mega drive base. does one make games for several systems for the same company or just go to nintendo or sega who just have one system.

on a side not the saturn was a pain in the butt to make games for so that could be factored in too :)
