The other day I was clicking between shows and caught this odd little snippet which I honestly do not believe. The speaker claimed that the average person lies 3 times in a 10 minute conversation. Now I will grant you that I am not average ;) but, I try to be fairly honest and believe most other people are fairly honest with me. However, I thought I'd ask you folks, honestly, how often do you lie? How often do you think you're being lied to?

Tim Roth never lies about lying. Bite your tongue!

I prefer to have other people bite my toungue ;)

Oh, and here's Merriam Websters definition of a Lie:

To lie is to make statements that are untrue, whether or not the falsity of such statements is known by the speaker. A lie can be a genuine falsehood or a selective truth, a lie by omission, or even the truth if the intention is to deceive or to cause an action not in the listener's interests.

Innuendo-five!

:D oh that's nothing - you should read the Guestion Thread sometime... (no I didn't mis-type that, the original author did)

even when i lie i tell the truth

Lying's become a natural part of my life.

Not!

Or maybe it has...

These days? Hardly ever. I lost my touch. :csad:

I find I often lie just to make people feel good, like if, when I tell a co-worker I had been called and complimented by a member of management that I said a good word about them as well.

I don't think the issue is how much someone lies. I mean we all lie. My question is what type of liar are you. I'm not the type who makes stuff up. What I normally do when I lie to someone is I omit information. Like with my whole getting ready to move back to NY thing. Only a few people in my family know I plan on moving back to NY and transfering. I'll gladly tell people I'm taking no classes this semester and brushing up on my writing and trying to work as much as I can to gather money in mass. I'm just not telling them the sinister reasons I'm doing more writing or trying to get more working hours.

I don't consider omitting information lying. As long as what you say is truthful, you don't have to tell every single thing you're doing

I rarely ever lie. Ever.

At least purposefully. If the definition of a lie is just an untruth, whether it is known by the speaker or not, then I may lie more often than I think if I believe something to be true that actually isn't.

As far as lying with the intent to deceive, I rarely lie. I am a very open and honest person.

I think it becomes a lie when you omit the most important information of the fact.

Yeah. Leaving out a big thing that you know will get a reaction out of people... but saying a few things that deal with it but aren't the huge thing... that's definitely close to lying.
