How powerful is Dr. Strange?

That's bulls**t. I'm a DBZ fan. Well, at least I was until I had seen everything. After that, it just got kinda boring. Fact is, there are a lot of dukee bags in this world. Be they Dragon Ball fans, Hulk Fans, Batman Fans, Spider-Man fans, Trekkies, whatever. It's not the thing they love, it's the people who love it that's the problem. Except for Britney Spears fans. Those people should be strangled to death in front of they're own children.

DBZ fans can be labeled because they are DBZ fans. The crap is so one-dimensional and written at such a third-grade level that it becomes one of those situations where the stereotype LITERALLY encompasses every person without exception.

I guess you never saw a few shows or probably saw one or two episdes and said "this is crap".

And you say its so one-dimensional, couldn't you say that about Marvel or DC comics? "Oh it gets boring, all they do is repeat the same thing and if they do something new it sucks".

On the contrary - the difference between something like DBZ and Marvel/DC comics is the character development. Just as in any work, be it fantasy, sci-fi, or somewhere in between, the amount of time the author spends in developing the characters' personalities and attitudes lends credence to any claims of depth and immersion.

In order to create any semblance of verisimilitude for the characters within a certain work, the author must take a good amount of time to tell us who the characters really are, and to make them *feel* like real people we can relate to.

A story is not written simply to tell the story; no, a story is written successfully by telling the story as it happens to and within the characters themselves.

That said, when the characters in a given work are simply there to constitute the ranks and to provide "uber cool" combat sequences, it's a one-dimensional work. Given, everyone likes their little bit of action - for some people, action is a bigger issue than the characters themselves. However, when you concentrate on a watered-down plot that is rife with combat just for the sake of combat, the work loses any relatability and depth that it might have claimed having in the first place.

DBZ is a paltry excuse for an edifice of simple-minded brutality. Much like Mortal Kombat or UFC, it's something that exists solely for the mind of an emotional, primal vehicle. As such, it clearly defines its fanbase.

That's absurd. By your logic, a DBZ fan couldn't like something as good as, say, Sandman.

Beisde the fact that when it hits the TV it gets everything edited out of it. I used to be a fan, I stopped watching when I saw the final GT episode and havent looked back. It was alright in pretty much every aspect as long as you didn't try to think it through, but I found the 20 episode battles were a bit much. I mean I'd stop watching for a week come back and they'd still be fighting, I'd skip another week and they'd STILL BE FIGHTING!!! I got sick of it after a bit, but the only really good part I found was when Gohan became a superhero. Beyond that it's was alright but not much more.

I like how you label DBZ fans. For one thing I have been a fan of comic books way longer than DBZ so before you go labelling DBZ fans (which I have been one for like what, 2 years?) think about what you say.

And I guess my question was quite vague. How does he rank among the Marvel Universe is a more accurate question.

Was that directed at me? I'm not labeling DBZ fans as anything, what I AM guilty of is of making an assumption based on your user name. I saw it, remembered that it's a common thing for DBZ fans to start VS. threads in this and the DC board (please note that I never said that it's the only thing they do) and asked a question to see if that was what you were looking for. Before you go asking for other people to think about what they say I would suggest that you turn that philosophy on yourself, please. Thank you.:D

In regards as to why his presence in the Illuminati it's probably because they wanted a group that could gather intel and face any kind of challenge. Stephen is obviously the choice for the mystical aspect since he's the current Sorecerer Supreme; in his own words his in charge of protecting the Earth from all mystical attacks. I would also surmise that his ability to scry and project his astral form basically anywhere would allow him to gather even more information than some of the other members.

I was wondering something. Dr. Strange is supposed to protect Earth from demon invasions right? Inferno anyone? Where was he???

Not necessarily. While being a fan of something like DBZ doesn't directly equivocate to being an actual intellectual midget (for lack of a better term :D ), it does reflect upon said fan's regular tastes and mode of thought. For instance, they might very well be able to enjoy Sandman to a certain degree, but I'd be willing to bet their favorite parts of the comics are going to be the combat scenes. :D

I'll renege on my earlier comment where I said that ALL DBZ fans have to be a certain way. It wasn't fair, as there are always exceptions to any classificiation. That said, it's still a large majority of this sect that fall under the definitions I provided.

I mean, juxtapose for a moment ten DBZ fans to ten Sandman fans...or even ten Marvel mainstream readers. The contrast will be apparent, I can assure you.

I mean I'd stop watching for a week come back and they'd still be fighting, I'd skip another week and they'd STILL BE FIGHTING!!!

Thank you. :D

Not necessarily. One of my favorite stories was the ultimate battle fake-out, where Lucifer opts to play a mindgame by giving the keys to bad place to Dream rather than fight him. The collection of gods and angels that came to the auction was amusing.

I also like the story of Hob Gadling, the man who simply refuses to die.

And the Midsummer Night's Dream story? Good stuff.

Combat in Sandman was few and far between. If my favorite parts were the combat scenes, I wouldn't have made it past Preludes & Nocturnes.

Meanwhile, I simply couldn't stand Preacher, a comic riddled with violence. Read most of the first trade, and put it down.

I have a friend who's a huge fan of DBZ, and one of his favorite videogames is Xenosaga. And anyone who's "played" Xenosaga knows that it is the slowest game ever created, and it's basically one glorified cut-scene.

Ummm, sales? Why doesn't Sentry wipe out most of the villians in the MU? That's flawed logic.

No no, that's logical. Flaed logic is what Marvel and DC use

Agreed, I like DB & DBZ but only up until the Cell saga ends. After that I lose major interest and you can tell why. Toryiama didn't want to keep doing the series.

strange would have ate dumbledore and voldemort for breakfast.

And here I was thinking that I was the only one stunned by the random-ness of that moment.:o

Back to business, Dr. Strange is by and far one of the most powerful charcters in the Marvel Universe, has been for a long time and still can't seem to get a decent solo title.:(

I blame Alan Moore. He should have taken over Dr. Strange and done something phenomenal ages ago. But the man just doesn't know how to let s**t go.

I blame Alan but not wholly, Marvel should have gotten another established writer or took a chance on some newer talent a long time ago to write Strange. There was so many avenues and actual original storylines with him, not to mention the enormous fanbase he's gathered over the years.:down

That last JMS mini was just kinda....meh. I mean, very Matrix like. I would have loved to have seen Gaimen write an in continuity Strange. Loved him in 1602.

I was referring to that quote.

I actually like the whole thing, leading up to it, the politics (if there are any), the problems, conflicts, and the combat scenes. Nice job in labelling fans there. Oh, by the way, most comic fan's favorite scenes are the fight scenes. And that was not by judging their likes, but by seeing their posts and what people say what comics are their favorite.

And back to Dr. Strange... In other words, David Blaine couldn't beat him in a magic fight.

He's an idiot, I wouldn't even bother.

A Dr. Strange mini-series by Brian K. Vaughan and Marcos Martin is supposed to be coming out sometime. I don't think there's a release date or much news on it, though.

Anubis, are you saying that I'm an idiot? I'm not sure where I made you feel that way, but of all the negative terms that I've been called in life, that's very easily the least applicable.
