Action-Adventure Hunger Games Prequel | Lionsgate

Hey, just cast some sexy young actor like Timothy Chalamet and he’ll be forgiven!

Hollywood loves giving evil monsters sympathetic backstories. Freud would have a field day.

Contestants should experience hunger in this movie, and that is what motivates ruthlessness in them to make them seek out killing each other.
The movies made most contestants ruthless just for the sake of it, and I'm not really big on how they handled that.

Battle Royale
made kids try as much as they can avoid killing unless the person killed is so annoying with rapist tendency, or ones that are desperate to escape and fear the collar killing them.

I am so not in the mood to see a fascist dictator who ran a pedophile ring and forced kids to kill each other for entertainment get a humanising backstory. Super disappointed this is the route Collins decided to take. It could be a well written book and a well directed movie but it’s still a super ****ty direction to take the prequel in.

And dear god can you imagine how ****ing annoying the stans for him are going to be?

We don’t really know anything about how she’ll approach it. Let’s wait. Just because he’s the lead character, doesn’t necessarily make him the “hero”.

He is human.

Is the pedophile ring something movies avoided using? I don't remember seeing this stuff.

It was definitely downplayed in the movies. There might’ve been a line or two in Catching Fire but I can’t remember for sure. There might’ve been nothing at all in there. But in the books, he forces the victors of the Hunger Games into having sex with the wealthy people from the Capitol. Finnick Odair was one of those forced into child prostitution.

Finnick said something in one of the Mockingjay movies about being used for sex and trading sex for information, but I don't think it was specified to be below the (our) age of consent.

Should have made a trilogy about the downfall of the old world that led to the formation of the district's and the First Hunger Game. Would have been more interesting than "The Life and Rise of a Forgettable Dictator".

I don’t know. The dystopian/war aspects were some of the least interesting parts which is why Mockinjay was so meh. The game/capital needs to be included.

Francis Lawrence on the 15th Anniversary of 'Constantine' & 'The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes' - Exclusive Interview | DiscussingFilm

To end off, you briefly mentioned The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which is the novel recently released to the delight of many Hunger Games fans. You are set to direct the live-action adaptation, so what are your thoughts on the book and getting to dive back into The Hunger Games world from a new angle?

FL: Well I love it! I had a great time doing three out of the four movies. It’s a great group of people, I love Suzanne Collins and I love the world. I’ve really always loved the thematic relevance and ideas behind the books and stories. I think that’s part of why we got such a great cast and I think that’s also why it’s resonated with so many people and not just teenagers, but also adults. I was always eager to get back into the world, but I just wanted to make sure that it came from an organic place and for me, that’s always from Suzanne, as opposed to a studio sort of urging everybody to come up with a sequel or prequel.

When I heard that she was writing a book, I got really excited. She called me before it was released and filled me in a little bit about what it was about, but she didn’t want to spoil anything so that I would enjoy the read. When she was done working with her editors, she she sent it over to her agent’s office here in LA and I went in and read it over the course of two days in this office and just loved it. I loved the story, I love what it’s about, and I love how relevant it is. She’s always really good at that. She’s a really fun writer in terms of twists and page turn-ability of her books, so that was great. The characters are awesome and it’s really exciting to dive back into a different, earlier version of the world and for the most part with a bunch of new characters. So yeah, really exciting and the script is progressing really well!

Freeform has been airing all of the Hunger Games films this weekend and based on the current political climate of the US, I can’t help but wonder if this was done on purpose. If not, it’s extremely coincidental. I’ve barely thought about this series after it ended until the past year or so where it seems more relevant than ever before.

It's really weird how this franchise came and went. I quite enjoyed them, and actually own them still. They seem much more relevant now. I have no knowledge about how Snow's prequel book is, but I'm down for a film. Why not? Hope it's not too Trump-y though.

I feel that time has been and will continue to be kind to the Hunger Games franchise. It came and went within four years but I also appreciate that it didn’t really overstay its welcome the way other franchises have. The only major flaw is that the final book really didn’t need to be split into two films, but because of Deathly Hallows, that was just the nature of Hollywood at the time until it severely backfired with the Divergent series. If Mockingjay is viewed as one long four hour film that can be overlooked but it still doesn’t help that even the book was the weakest of the trilogy (yet still not bad). Much like the Fantastic Beasts films, a Hunger Games prequel won’t really affect the main series at all.

Agreed. I think it's aged pretty well as a series, and it stands apart from that glut of young adult films that followed. Even though I agree the third book shouldn't have been split, I still enjoy both parts well enough.

I like that everyone involved seems to have been patient and not immediately jumped at spin-offs. I'm cool with Francis Lawrence returning. I've liked a few of his films.

Lawrence is an underrated director. Complain all you want about Reeves as Constantine, that movie is well directed and pretty damn good.

Constantine and I Am Legend are both films I think are very flawed but quite captivating.

I actually wouldn't hate Lawrence directing another DC movie if the script was decent.

The alternate ending is not perfect either, but it's damn better than what we got and more in spirit with the novel.

I was so glad it was released as its own cut. As you said, not perfect either, but it actually honours the spirit of the novel and pays off what the film itself was setting up. This is the version I've watched since home release.

It's a good observation about how THG kinda came and went but I'm not surprised. It's happened to a few of these fad franchises.
Remember even Twilight which was massive despite all the detractors think. But after if ended it just kinda withered away and no one cared much anymore. There's not that much demand for a new Twilight movie.
Fifty Shades was huge but by the 3rd movie no one cared.
THG I really liked the first 2 books and I thought the first movie was ok and the 2nd movie was great. Mockingjay, both parts were kinda trash.

Why it happens? I'm not 100 percent sure. Mockingjay was bad but it wasn't dumpster fire. Maybe once you took the games outta the franchise people lost interest? I know I did. I think it honestly might just be that the franchise was dormant for a long time. I didn't realize how long ago it was since the last Mockingjay movie. It's been like almost 6 years. And the prequel only dropped last year. 5 years is a long time to not have anything official drop from a beloved franchise. Unless you're like Harry Potter/Star Wars level of loved. And even with HP there was Pottermore, video games, Cursed Child to keep the franchise going not long after DH2 came out

One that flew under the radar that I think ended up being better than THG is Maze Runner. Never read the books and I hear the movies take a lot of liberties but I thought that was a legit good trilogy front to back
